  • This episode premiered on Sean Bean's birthday.

  • Sophie Turner, the actress playing Sansa Stark, later adopted Zunni, the dog who played Lady.

  • Filming the episode with the dogs proved difficult as Sean Bean has reported. In his scene with Lady, the animal was too scared to remain still. They had to keep rehearsing the scene until the dog felt comfortable, making the scene's shooting take three hours instead of the few minutes it should have taken.

  • The DVDs to season one were are recalled due to the scene in this episode where all the severed heads are shown because one of them bared a resemblance to former president George W. Bush. The head was digitally removed in subsequent publications.

  • Dragonslayer: Viserys Targaryen is naming off all of the dragon skulls in the throne hall and lists Vermithrax among them. Vermithrax Perjorative was the attacking dragon in the 1981 movie Dragonslayer. George R.R. Martin, the author of the books the show is based on, considers Dragonslayer as one of his favorite fantasy movies, so the writer of this episode added a deliberate reference to that movie in honor of this.

  • The scene with the soldiers invading the brothel, looking for King Robert's bastard offspring, even chasing down a woman with a babe in her arms, is an allusion to an early scene in Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments" when Pharaoh Seti I, on advice from his astronomers, ordered the slaying of the Hebrew children to prevent the rise of their Messiah.
