  • show Description
  • "One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles!" Gargoyles is an animated series created and produced by Greg Weisman, and aired from October 24, 1994 to 1997.moreless

  • Quotes (417)

    • Tom I'm Tom! What's your name? Lexington: Except for Goliath, we don't have names. Tom: How do you tell each other apart? Lexington: Well, we look different. Tom: But what do you call each other? Brooklyn: Friend.

    • Brooklyn: Sent to the rookery. How embarrassing. Broadway: I haven't been down here since I hatched. Lexington: I hope we're not down here long. He might eat us.

    • Goliath: (to Demona) I won't go alone. Remember, you and I are one, now and forever.

    • Captain of the Guard: Goliath, we owe you our lives. Goliath: As we owe you ours every day.

    • Hakon's Soldier: Attacking a castle full of gargoyles near nightfall. This is crazy, and Hakon knows it. Hakon: No, my friend. That's not crazy. Questioning my sanity when I'm in earshot. That's crazy.

    • Goliath: Why were you attacked? Xanatos: The richer you are, the more enemies you have. And I'm very rich.

    • Magus: You blackguard! If I had my book of spells, I'd... Hakon: (laughs) Might you be referring to this book, Magus? Magic spells, hah! Makes me glad I can't read!

    • Goliath: You broke the spell of sleep that imprisoned us Xanatos, and for that we are grateful. But we will never trust humans again.

    Notes (145)

    • Star Trek Voice Actors: Many characters on the show are voiced by actors who stared on the various Star Trek series. These include Jonathan Frakes (Xanatos) and Marina Sirtis (Demona), who played William Riker and Deanna Troi respectively in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Frank Welker, and Clancy Brown have played guest roles in Star Trek.

    • The scene where Xanatos says, "Pay a man enough and he'll walk through hell barefoot" is cut from the video release.

    • While Hudson got his name in "Awakening, Part Three," Lexington, Brooklyn, Broadway, and Bronx picked their names at the beginning of this episode.

    • This marks the first appearance of the Steel Clan.

    • This episode, along with "Temptations" is available on VHS as Gargoyles: The Hunted.

    • First appearance of The Pack and it's "core" members- Wolf, Fox, Jackal, Hyena and Dingo.

    • When portions of the episode were used for page 12 & 13 of the Look and Find Gargoyles book, Demona is erroneously presented as a member of the clan.

    • This episode, along with "The Thrill of the Hunt" is available on VHS as Gargoyles: The Hunted.

    Trivia (126)

    • The cut in Goliath's hand disappears for the entire battle sequence.

    • When Goliath reawakens after a thousand years, his toes curl and rip up the ledge of the pedestal that he's perched on. But in the next shot, the ledge he's standing on is undamaged.

    • In the scene where Xanatos opens a secret compartment to reveal a laser rifle, Xanatos--who's wearing a gray coat and no gloves--reaches for the gun in a wide shot, but the close-up shows a pair of gloved hands with a gray bracer on one forearm and blue fabric on the other, like on the commandos' uniforms.

    • The yellow exosuits that Xanatos' movers use to disassemble Castle Wyvern's masonry look remarkably similar to the suit Sigourney Weaver's character Ripley wore in the film Aliens.

    • Animation error: around 9:49 Broadway's wings are missing

    • Since Hudson watches so much TV, wouldn't he be the first to pick up on American lingo? Besides, how were Broadway, Brooklyn, and Lexington able to pick up new lingo in one night since they couldn't interact with anyone directly?

    • Trivia: The name of the company that made the tracer is Scarab Corporation.

    • Trivia: Bill and Susan's last name is Green. Their parents are named William Greene (Dad) and Sarah Browne (Mom).

    Allusions (39)

    • The pose that Goliath takes for his thousand-year sleep is almost identical to The Thinker, Auguste Rodin's sculpture of the poet Dante.

    • Disney movies on TV While Hudson is channel surfing, you can see Pride Rock Scene from from The Lion King. This movie was the 32nd animated film released by the Walt Disney Company's in 1994.You can also see the starving wolf from The Sword and the Stone.

    • Cagney and Lacey Elisa’s cat’s name is Cagney after the character on the cop drama Cagney and Lacey. Det Chris Cagney was played by Meg Foster and later Sharon Gless.

    • Lexington: Goliath was talking about a play called Macbeth by some new writer named Shakespeare. Macbeth is a famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare circa 1606, giving a much-distorted account of Macbeth's reign.

    • 10-31 Police dispatcher: All units! All units! Ten thirty-one at Museam of Modern art. A 10-31 is a police crime code indicating a burglary in progress.

    • The Fugitive The scene where Demona with a gun confronts Hudson on the edge of a sewage pipe that drops off into a collection pond, and Hudson dives off into the water instead, almost exactly parallels the scene from The Fugitive where Dr. Kimble (Harrison Ford) dives off when confronted by Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones).

    • When Lexington modifies the Pack's helicopter, he gives it a gargoyle-ish look, but the scalloped wings and heavy armory make it look a lot like the stylized Bat-vehicles from the Batman movies and TV series.

    • Brooklyn: Yeah, you and what Starfleet? In Star Trek, Starfleet is the military and exploration corps of the United Federation of Planets.
