  • show Description
  • Set in a hospital and from the production team behind Smack The Pony, Green Wing has been described as "part surreal soap, part innovative comedy drama" and follows the sometimes strange, and often amusing, antics of its staff. There's new doctor Caroline Todd whose first day on the job is far from perfect. Then there's Dr. Alan Statham, the boring Consultant Radiologist who is constantly being outsmarted by his juniors and who is having a secret affair with hot tempered and no-nonsense Head of Human Resources Joanne Clore. To help the staff with any of their problems there is Staff Liaison Office Sue White (who is more likely to laugh at, then help solve, your troubles) and the object of her affection, smooth talking surgeon Dr. "Mac" Macartney who spends most of his time making stupid competitive bets with Anaesthetist Guy "I'm God's gift to women" Secretan. Senior Paediatrics Register Dr. Angela Hunter has very little problems, except trying to get that kink out of her boyfriend's ‘perfect' nose, while the girls in admin Kim, Harriet, Naughty Rachel and Karen spend more time talking about their sex lives than actually doing any work. And then there are the junior doctors; the confident and sarcastic Boyce and the drippy, useless Dr. Martin Dear who is hated by the patients and desperate for a woman, preferably Dr. Todd if he can manage it.Green Wing was devised and produced by Victoria Pile.moreless

  • Quotes (58)

    • Mac: (showing him a piece of paper) Martin, see this, is that your signature? Martin: Yeah it is, yeah. Mac: Can't really do smiley faces on death certificates, it does look a little bit insensitive, okay?

    • Dr. Statham: Most women find male body piercing repugnant. I, thankfully, am completely intact. Mac: Well even I draw the line at piercing arseholes. Dr. Statham: (misunderstanding) Exactly!

    • (Talking about relationships) Angela: Out of interest what does long term mean to you? Guy: It's an airport car park. Angela: Monogamy? Guy: Nice dark sort of wood, sideboards. Angela: What's the C word? Guy: Unt.

    • Caroline: (to Mac) Can I have a quick word? Mac: "Zoom" and "Whoosh" - there you are quick words, words that are quick.

    • Caroline: [Apparently] pubic topiary is the new pashmina. Martin: Yeah, yeah, you could have a heart done, or your initial. Or a lovely swan. Caroline: Or a C for Caroline (pause) oh no, no, people might get the wrong idea. They might think it's C for something else. Martin: Crazy, or someth… (Caroline shakes her head) Oh! Yes, the nasty C word. Caroline: Yeah, wouldn't want that. Martin: No. Well I mean…you don't want to signpost it anyway, do you? Pretty obvious to…to any…you know…visitors…there.

    • Naughty Rachel: (angry) I hate it when men say ‘I can't remember saying that' or ‘I was only joking'. Kim: Or, ‘I didn't mean it like that'. Naughty Rachel: Yeah and what about, ‘you only hear what you want to hear'. Karen: Or, ‘I'm actually a woman'.

    • (discussing motorcycle helmets) Martin: I'm thinking about getting an adamantium helmet. Mac: Yeah? That's the stuff that Wolverine's skeleton is made out of isn't it? Martin: Yep. Hardest metal in the world. Mac: Indeed, indeed. Sadly of course a fictional metal…so that would probably reduce its effectiveness in a crash style scenario."

    • Boyce: If you see a really pretty blonde girl, about 5' 7", green eyes, slightly foreign accent, can you tell her I've gone to radiology. Caroline: Yeah I suppose so. What's her name? Boyce: I've no idea, she might not even exist, but you know, just in case.

    Trivia (3)

    • Dr Statham cuts his tie off in one scene after Joanna breaks up with him. Later on, his tie is intact again.

    • Nick Frost appears in this episode. He has previously starred with Mark Heap (Dr. Statham) in Spaced.

    • After Karen dumps Martin, he and Mac start walking and Martin's hands are both empty and hanging down at his sides. A person passes in front of the camera and afterwards Martin suddenly has a coffee cup in his left hand.

    Allusions (10)

    • Kim: "The decision of the Sorting Hat is final."
The Sorting Hat is from the Harry Potter novels, and is how the wizards and witches are assigned to their houses. Using one on a Harry Potter website, Rachel and Harriot end up in Hufflepuff, Kim is assigned to Gryffindor and Karen to Slytherin (much to her despair).

    • Martin: "My name's Martin, as you know, and at school they used to call me Chuzzlewit because they said I looked Dickensian."
The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit was a transitional novel by Charles Dickens published serially between 1843-4 and followed the transformation of a selfish grandson.

    • Mac: "That's the stuff that Wolverine's skeleton is made out of isn't it?"
Wolverine is a character from the Marvel comic book series X-Men, whose special powers include retractable claws.

    • Guy: "Have you ever seen that film The Terminator? It's about this cyborg woman that get's pregnant..."
Guy is still trying to annoy Mac by referencing The Terminator, a 1984 film about a robot that comes back from the future to kill the unborn baby of a woman.

    • Guy: "All that she wants is another baby."
This lyric is from Ace Of Base's hit, All That She Wants, and is sung by Guy to Mac in an attempt to wind him up about his ex-girlfriend's pregnancy.

    • Alan Statham: "Why do birds suddenly appear…"
Alan sings The Carpenters hit ‘Close To You' to Joanna for her birthday.

    • Guy and Joanna: N/A
The scene in Guy's car where he is driving whilst an overeager (and probably quite drunk) Joanna sticks her tongue down his ear is reminiscent of the music video to 'Here I Go Again' by Whitesnake. Whether this is intentional or not is open to debate, but it's possible that Guy may well keep the odd album next to his Queen collection.

    • Guy: Well, I'm Butch- that's 'Butch' Cassidy, and you're the Sundance Kid... 'Oh, look at me, dancing in the sun, like a big kid!'
During one of Guy's many attempts at one-up-manship over Mac, he describes himself as the Butch Cassidy to Mac's Sundance Kid. Mac, of course, points out that the Sundance Kid was the better gun slinger... but check out their re-enactment of the film's final scene armed with a squash racket and a table-tennis bat!
