  • Episode Description
  • Dr. Chapman is arrested by Festus when he tries to sleep in Doc's office even though he has explained that Doc went to Baltimore to hone his medical skills. A letter explains that Doc felt so badly about a little girl's death that he could have prevented if he had been more in tune with modern medicine, that he had to leave. Not many in town are very cordial to Dr. Chapman and when Newly's shop blows up with Newly and Festus in it, they dislike him even more. Festus is all right, but Newly has a bone splinter in his brain and needs an operation. Chapman wins the town by performing the operation and saving Newly's life.moreless

  • A clever title goes here!

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (2)

    • Dr. Chapman (to Festus): You're crazier than a bedbug, you know that?

    • Festus: Whoever heard of a doctor turnin' down a free drink?

    Notes (2)

    • Dr. Chapman is featured in seven consecutive episodes in Season 17 beginning with this one (Episode 5) and ending with Episode 11 "Drago." Doc Adams returned in Episode 12, "Gold Train: The Bullet," the first part of Gunsmoke's only three-part episode written to welcome back Milburn Stone.

    • This episode and the rest of the season feature Pat Hingle as Doc Chapman. Milburn Stone had suffered a heart attack and would not return until the next season opener in Gold Train: The Bullet parts 1 through 3 even though he is still listed as being in the show in the opening credits.

    Trivia (2)

    • According to the calender on the wall of Newly's shop the explosion occurred on Mar. 27.

    • This isn't really a goof, but why give Kitty the letter to read to everyone when you know she's gonna end up bawling before the end?
