    • (Paladin is looking over the Hon. Diana Coulter's note)
Paladin: Now, where do you suppose she got such an idea about me?
      Hey Boy: She asked me.
Paladin: Uh, huh. And what else did you tell her?
Hey Boy: I told her you are good with the gunplay. Also Class A-1 gentleman, and never look at lady.
Paladin: Well, who exactly is the person that needs such horrible assurances about me?

    • Diana: Paladin! Paladin: What? Diana: May I say that I have been most favorably impressed by your behavior until now. Paladin: Thank you. Diana: Don't give me cause to change my opinion of you. Paladin: Well, I'll do my best to control the bestial side of my nature.

    • (Paladin snaps off the head of the arrow sticking through his chest, before the shaft can be removed) Diana: How will you keep from crying out? Paladin: By thinking of my scalp.

    • (Diana has her gun aimed at the approaching wounded Indian) Paladin: Now there's a man who doesn't know when he's through. He hasn't a chance of reaching us, you know. Diana: Then what keeps him going? Paladin: Hatred. Hatred in a dying man may be excuseable. But among the living, it can become an intolerable thing, that never gives its victim a moment's peace.

    Notes (1)

    • A Louis La'Mor moment in this interesting story in which it is clear how few options are available to an English woman in her own country. And how important family is to a woman alone in a strange country.

    Trivia (1)

    • The Honorable Diana Coulter is the first (and perhaps only) person to recognize the origin of Paladin's name: the twelve legendary peers of Charlamagne's court. Charlamagne (742-814 A.D.) was king of the Franks from 768-814, and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 800-814.
