  • A very powerful and grim episode. A really terrifying point is the fact that these men are not a frenzied mob--they're just impatient to get things over with so that they can go back to their work.

    • (Curley paws through Paladin's saddlebags and finds his wallet.) Curley: Just like we figured. Part of old Willis' savin's. McKay: Five or six hundred dollars. Where'd you hide the rest of it? Paladin: Would you like me to give you the name of the bank I drew that money out of? Or is fact admissable according to your rules of evidence? Curley: Shut up! Paladin: The prosecutor has an objection, Sheriff. Sustained or overruled?

    • Paladin: You ever see men armed with clubs go after a rabbit? Sheriff: Whaddya mean? Paladin: The more the rabbit runs and screams and tries to get away, the harder the men beat at it; no, I'd rather give this...gathering a chance to do some thinking.

    • Sheriff: I don't like this way of doing it. McKay: Well, I ain't moving into town. We'd have the same men on the jury there. Sheriff: There's a difference. McKay: He's just got you nervous. If he was down on his knees, crying and begging, this whole thing'ud go faster. Paladin: Wise words, Sheriff. A good lynching needs tears and screams and terror; the more excitement, the less thinking.

    • (McKay has accidently made it clear that he is in charge, not the sheriff) Paladin: "And in anger our lips shall form the truth". Huh. Herodotus, the second essay.

    • Paladin: Heaven help us from what men do in the name of good.

    Trivia (1)

    • (goof) Although Paladin's hands were supposed to be tied behind his back, when they started to put him on the horse, they clearly were not.
