  • Episode Description
  • Virge Beech has a habit of forcing men into gunfights with him, after which he claims self-defence. One of the men so killed was the brother of Adams, Tablerock's district prosecutor. Adams wants Paladin to kill Beech, but Paladin is not an assassin. A gunslinger who happens to be present takes on the job Paladin refused, and is killed in a fair gunfight. Adams promptly claims that he saw Beech kill in cold blood, and a trial is swiftly arranged. Paladin, out of his own sense of justice, defends the unpleasant Beech.moreless

    • Paladin: Now it is a remarkable facet of our system of jurisprudence. We take a perfectly ordinary chair, just like that one there. We put a supposed thoroughbred in it, and he immediately betrays himself by braying like a jackass.

    • Adams: What difference does it make? It seems to me you're forgetting the real reason we're holding this trial.
Judge Bryant: The trial is a search for truth, Prosecutor.
Adams: Virge Beech is a murderer! That's your precious truth! I've seen him take life. Every man in this room has seen the same.
Judge Bryant: If you must string him up, take him out and do it for something he's actually done. but don't ask me to--to run a proper court and then whine that the law casts too bright a light for--for a lynching.

    • Paladin: (To the judge after he defended and then had to kill Beech): Now on the contempt charge against the prosecutor, I'd appreciate it if you'd fine him exactly $1,000.
Judge Bryant: You charging us for killing Beech?
Paladin: No, sir. For defending him.
