  • After his father is murdered, Lieutenant Commander Steven J. McGarrett decides to return home to Oahu in order to catch the killer. The governor offers him the opportunity to run a new task force where he is able to call the shots. Steve brings together his own team, starting with Chin Ho Kelly, an ex-Honolulu Police Detective and former protege of McGarrett's father. Kelly has been assigned to a federal security patrol after being suspected of corruption. Detective Danny (Danno) Williams is a New Jersey cop who recently moved to the island to be close to his 8-year-old daughter, Grace. • Sang Min: What kind of cops are you? Steve: The new kind.

    • Steve: I've been tracking Victor Hesse for five years; if he was bold enough to surface, I promise you, he already has an exit strategy planned and he knows I know it. Which means, I can barely afford the hour it's going to take to bury my father, let alone stand here talking to you. Excuse me. Governor Jameson: I can help you find the son of a bitch! With full immunity and means. Your task force will have blanket authority to go after guys like Hesse and get them the hell of my island. Your rules, my backing, no red tape.

    • Steve: I take it your marriage didn't end well. Danny: No, it would have, had my ex not remarried and dragged my daughter to this pineapple-infested hellhole. Steve: You don't like the beach? Danny: No, I don't like the beach. Steve: Who doesn't like the beach? Danny: I like cities, you know, skyscrapers, no tsunamis, no jellyfish. Steve: Tell me you can swim. Danny: Can I swim? Steve: You don't know how to swim. Danny: I know...how..I swim...I swim for survival, not for fun.

    • Danny: Hey, Hey , Hey! This guy, Doran's a shooter; we shouldn't be doing this without backup. Steve: You are the backup. Danny: I'm the back up… I hate him... I hate him so much.

    • Danny: (to Steve who is explaining the special type of shoe Hesse wears and why the boot print is not hi ) Your brain must be a miserable place.

    • Danny: Is everything gonna become a personal mission for you? You hang a guy off a roof because you lost your father? Steve: Danny, you know what... Danny: I swear to God, I just wanna know. I wanna know because if everything is gonna become a personal mission to you, I count my odds at job security, not to mention survival pretty slim. Okay? We are partners. So if you are going to be the shoot first, ask questions later type of a guy, I would at least like to be consulted so I know when to duck.

    • Danny: If a suspect dies, he no longer has the ability to speak! Ergo, he's useless to us! Steve: (To guy he's hanging off roof) You think anybody's gonna care? You just killed two people, buddy! I'd be doing the world a favor! Danny: That's enough! Chin: Ladies! You can stop now. I got a fingerprint match off an Interpol database. Steve: Ergo? Danny: You and I are gonna have a long talk later, you understand? Get him up!

    • Steve: It's the tie, no one is Hawaii wears a tie. Danny: Oh, I'm sorry, I like to look like a professional. Steve: Professional what? Danny: Okay, this is my favorite tie. Grace gave me this tie for father's day. Oh and also, so you know, back in Jersey and every normal city in this country, this is what a detective looks like. (Referencing his dress)

    Trivia (59)

    • Goof: In John McGarrett's garage, Danny and Steve have their guns pointed at each other and slowly pull out their respective badges. The first shot of Danny with his badge in his left hand shows the badge is upside down. After the camera pans to Steve's badge it then pans back to Danny where his left hand, fingers in the same position, are still holding the badge but the badge is right side up now.

    • Goof: When Hesse shoots McGarrett, he shoots him in the left shoulder. After the fight is over, when Steve is looking down at the water for Hesse's body, the image has been inverted; blood is dripping from a laceration over Steve's right eye and the bullet wound is to his right shoulder. In the next scene, everything has reverted back to his left side.

    • Steven J. McGarrett went to Annapolis then spent five years in Naval Intelligence and six years with the Navy Seals.

    • The car Steve McGarrett uncovers in his father's garage is the actual 1974 Mercury Marquis Brougham, which was the second car Jack Lord used in the original TV series.

    • In the pilot, Danny's car is a grey Mustang. In this episode, and in future episodes, the car is a silver metallic Camaro.

    • Goof: In the pilot episode, McGarret's naval uniform is shown with two rows of ribbons and medals on it. At the end of this episode, his uniform is shown with seven to eight rows of ribbons and medals on it.

    • Kahuku High School, located in the town of Kahuku on North Shore, where the football game in the opening of the episode was being played, does have an outstanding varsity football team, but they are the Red Raiders, not the Kings.

    • The microbes Chin refers to in the episode may be a spirochaete bacterium called Leptospira, which causes a nasty bacterial disease called Leptospirosis. It is endemic throughout all fresh water streams, lakes and ponds throughout the state. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting.

    • Danny: Steve the Science Guy is back. Danny says this in reference to Steve using the dust from a bag inside a vacuum cleaner and a feather from a duster in order to get finger prints- instead of using Kono's fingerprint kit in her car. This alludes to the kids science program " Bill Nye: The Science Guy ". Bill Nye wants to foster a scientifically literate society, helping people understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. He is a scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, but is known for his kids program. He has also made guest appearances in some episodes of scripted televisions series, such as Stargate Atlantis.

    • The new governor's name, Sam Denning, is most likely a nod to actor Richard Denning, who played Governor Paul Jameson on the original series, which ran for twelve seasons, from 1968 to 1980.

    • One of the wreck divers' names is Jimmy Koller, which is pronounced the same as Kholer. Richie Kohler is a wreck diver made famous by the book Shadow Divers; a true story about a group of wreck divers who explore and identify a WWII U-Boat off the coast of New Jersey. Richie Kohler is also a host of multiple Discovery Chanel programs about shipwreck exploration. This character may have been named in homage to the shadow divers.

    • Chin: (to Lori climbing the tree to retrieve the parachute) You sure you don't need any help recovering that evidence Sheena?

Sheena is a reference to Sheena, Queen of The Jungle, a fictional American comic book jungle girl, originally published by Fiction House in 1938. There were subsequent television series, a film and a web series.

    • When Max and Agent Morrison come face to face in Max's lab, Max asks Morrison if they've met before - he thinks he knows him from some previous encounter, but can't remember where. This is an inside-joke, acknowledging the reunion of Masi Oka (Max) and Greg Grunberg (Morrison), who worked together from 2006 to 2010 as regular cast members on the television series Heroes.

    • Frank Bama (Jimmy Buffett) appears to be named after the main character in Buffett's novel Where is Joe Merchant?.

    • "I'm a margarita man myself." This refrences Jimmy Buffett's song "Wasting Away Again in Margaritaville." Buffet also owns a chain of resturants called Margaritaville across the United States.

    • Danny: Well, I'm opposed to anything that has to do with sharks, uh, due to self-preservation, you see.
Steve: I remember your fear of becoming man sushi.

This is in reference to episode 3x03 Lana I Ka Moana that aired October 8, 2012.
