    • Cullen: What the hell were you thinking? Getting on with a white woman.
      Elam: I'm a freed man.
      Cullen: You ain't that free.
Elam: Why do you get to decide that?

    • Lily: Mr. Bohannon, has anyone ever told you what an insufferable ass you are?
      Cullen: Yeah.

    • Cullen: You want revenge?
      Durant: I want justice.
Cullen: Different words for the same thing.
Durant: Kill the renegades, Mr. Bohannon

    • Cullen: You ain't much of a drinking man is you?
      Elam: Gave it up.
      Cullen: Why is that?
Elam: Last time I got drunk, I got into something bad.

    • Durant: Have you ever had your heart ripped out by a woman?
The Swede: I was married once sir, but she ran off with a gypsy. My heart was not ripped out but she did steal my cuckoo clock.

    • Elam: You told me something once and it was the only thing that ever set me free.
      Cullen: Yeah, what was that?
Elam: Gotta let go of the past.

    • Reverend Cole: But brother, there ain't a damn thing God can do to help us.
Cullen: What are you saying preacher?
Reverend Cole: Choose hate, it's so much easier. Brother, choose hate.

    • Lily: Could you possibly help me? That is, if you're not to busy killing anyone.
Cullen: Well sure as heck can't do any worse (looking down to the floorboards).

    • For the first time, AMC uses another show as a lead-in for viewers. The Walking Dead aired immediately before Hell on Wheels from November 6, 2011 to November 27, 2011 (4 episodes). This lead to significant viewership gains for Hell on Wheels. The Walking Dead then went on hiatus until the new year.

    • The production crew could not find a period locomotive that would fit the needs for the show. They decided to build a train out of foam and wood. The wheels and undercarriage were hand-made by iron workers that look very much like a period locomotive. They added smoke boxes and a dry ice generator to complete the overall look of a working train.

    • Original International Air Dates:
      Turkey: March 4, 2012 on CNBC-e

    • Production: The crew was plagued with bad weather for 6 weeks during the filming of the remaining episodes of the first season which took place from May 2011 to September 2011.

    Trivia (8)

    • Cullen uses a Griswald revolver as his weapon of choice. The Griswald is one of the rarest guns. Only 100,000 were produced and then the warehouse blew up in an explosion. It is claimed to be the Magnum of the 1880s.

    • Filming Locations and Production: The pilot was filmed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and surrounding areas from August 2010 to September 2010.

    • Christopher Heyerdahl actually has a cousin named Thor. Christopher himself was born in British Columbia, but does proclaim himself as half Norwegian and half Scottish, a slight contrast to the character of Thor Gunderson, who says he is fully Norwegian.

    • The episode's title comes from the quote "a new birth of freedom" U.S. President Abraham Lincoln used in his Gettysburg Address. He delivered the speech during the American Civil War, on Thursday, November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He used the term to describe the war's effort to unify the nation and each state's rights.

    • Reverend Cole referred to beingpart of John Brown's party which slaughtered "slave owners" in Kansas.

The facts: At Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas in May, 1856, John Brown supervised (his word) the murder of 5 men (two of them were brothers in their late teens) who were pro-slavery and, no doubt, aspiring slave owners, but they actually owned no slaves.

    • The episode title is French and translates to: "I will never forget you."

    • The episode title is a reference to the phrase "bread and circuses" taken from the Satire X written by the poet, Juvenal (circa 100 AD). The term is a metaphor for a superficial means of appeasement. In Satire X, Roman politicians devise a plan, in 140 BC, to effectively win the votes of their new citizens and rise to power — provide cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses."

    • When Lily moves out of Durant's quarters and into a tent, Eva stops by and advises her to get someone to lay wood down for a floor to prevent getting trench foot.

The first known usage of that term was in 1915 and it referred to problems experienced by soldiers fighting trench warfare during WWI.
