  • This is the story of a time long ago, A time of myth and legend, when the Earth was still young. The ancient gods were petty and cruel, and they plagued mankind with suffering and besieged them with terrors. For centuries the people had nowhere to turn, no one to look to for help. Until he arrived. He was a man like no other. Born of a beautiful mortal woman, but fathered by Zeus, king of the gods. Hercules possessed a strength the world had never seen, a strength surpassed only by the power of his heart....No matter what obstacle, as long as there were people crying for help, there was one man who would never rest --- Hercules.moreless

    • Hercules: Aren't you even the least bit scared of what's out there in those woods? Iolaus: Please, there's nothing anywhere out there that can frighten me! Hercules: Unless of course it's more of Ania's cooking.

    • (Iolaus has just been stabbed, and Hercules is kneeling beside him, holding him)
Iolaus: We fought well, you and me... didn't we?
      (Hercules takes Iolaus's hand)
Hercules: You're not gonna die, Iolaus, you can't! You said we'd go down together, remember? Back to back, heroes!
      Iolaus: Can't... wait... Hercules...
      Hercules: Iolaus, no!
Iolaus: Tell Ania, how much I wanted to be her husband... Goodbye, my friend. (Iolaus dies)

    • Alcmene: So, are you going to tell me how you got that cut or not? Hercules: I met a kid on the road. She turned into a thing. It was completely unprovoked. Alcmene: Another one of Hera's creations, no doubt. That bitch!

    • Iolaus: (As his fiance prepares dinner for them.) So Hercules, what do you think?
Hercules: I think there's a weird smell coming from the kitchen.

    • Lysia: I'm sure you're used to having your way with women. I bet they just fall at your feet wherever you go. Well, not here. (Lysia kicks Hercules' legs out from under him) Here, you fall at our feet!

    • Hippolyta: Men can learn nothing except to deceive and dominate and kill. Hercules: So show me another way! Hippolyta: No! Hercules: I don't think you could even if you wanted to. Hippolyta: And why do you say that? Hercules: Because you don't know any other way. You've become exactly like the men you hate.

    • Lysia: (To Hercules.) If it were up to me, you wouldn't be caged. You'd be buried.

    • Zeus: (When Lysia orders him to strip) I beg you to please be gentle with me. Or if you wish, rough!

    Notes (226)

    • In the movies, Kevin Sorbo's hair is augmented by hair extensions. It grew long enough for him to forgo once they started filming the TV show.

    • When casting the role of Hercules, Rob Tapert said he wanted an all American, Joe Montana type of guy to play the hero rather than some muscle bound type.

    • The working title for this movie was 'Hercules: The Journey Begins'.

    • The role of Waylan was meant to continue into the Hercules TV show, but when they decided that there was no real room for growth within the character they created the part of Salmoneus for Robert Trebor because they enjoyed his work.

    • There was a similar plot-line involving Hercules on the Xena Warrior Princess episode "Prometheus". Hera chained Prometheus and mankind lost not only fire but also the ability to heal until Prometheus was freed.

    • Four television movies were originally planned, but this fifth one was commissioned at the last minute when another Action Pack movie dropped out of the line-up. Due to it's last minute nature, much of the story consists of flashbacks from the previous four movies.

    • Using peacock feathers for symbolizing Hera was originally done to save money, but was kept because the viewers had stated that they did indeed like it.

    • This episode marks the third sidekick in as many episodes in a row. The first being Iolaus, the second being Salmoneus and the third being Tiresias in this episode.

    Trivia (327)

    • This marks the first appearance of Lucy Lawless in Hercules Universe.

    • Rose McIver went on to play Ilea, Hercules' daughter in the later series. David Taylor went on to play Solan, Xena's son, in the spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess.

    • In this episode it is established that Hercules is not yet married.

    • This is the first time Iolaus dies and is brought back to life. This shall happen several other times during the series.

    • This is Renee O'Connor's first role in the Hercules/Xena franchise. Rob Tapert liked her so well in the role of Young Deianeira that when they decided to create the spin-off Xena Warrior Princess, he wanted her for the part of Gabrielle. Sunny Doench was hired to play the part of Gabrielle originally by Universal Studios, but when the actress pulled out for personal reasons, Tapert got his own first pick for the role with O'Connor.

    • Nathaniel Lees went on to have a number of different roles in the following series including reprising the role of the Blue Priest in "The Wedding of Alcmene". He also appeared in different roles in the two spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess and Young Hercules.

    • Elizabeth Hawthorne, who played "Queen Omphale", later went on to play Hercules' mother in the series. She also had roles in the two spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess and Young Hercules, and starred as "Voice" in the Renaissance show Cleopatra 2525.

    • Nitpick: Cheiron is a centaur in Greek mythology as well as in future episodes of Hercules and Young Hercules, but this Cheiron more closely resembles a Satyr or Faun.

    • In Greek mythology (and possibly in reality), the Amazons were a nation of warrior women. Hippolyta was a notable queen of the Amazons. She was visited by Hercules and Theseus during one of Hercules' labors, and Theseus took her as his wife. Amazonian raiders were often depicted in battle with Greek warriors in classical art. According to myth, no men were permitted in Amazon country, but once a year, in order to prevent their race from dying out, they visited men of a neighboring tribe. The sons that they had were either left with their fathers, or killed. The daughters were brought up and trained by the tribe. It is said that the Amazons founded many cities and fought some well known battles.

    • One of the real Hercules' 12 labors was to defeat the Lernean Hydra. This is the one labor he could not have succeeded in without the help of Iolaus. Each time Hercules cut off one of its heads two sprouted from the trunk until Iolaus cauterized it with a torch. Even then it had one more head that was immortal, so Hercules cut it off and buried it. It was still alive, but rendered helpless.

    • Waylan was conceived to be played along the lines of the butler, played by Sir John Gielgud, in the movie Arthur.

    • In mythology, Hercules was ordered to be the slave of Queen Omphale for a year as punishment for killing his family while insane. Omphale dressed Hercules in woman's clothing and made him spin and weave cloth.

    • In Mythology Hercules was mortally wounded from wearing the robe dipped in Nessus' blood. Deianeira gave it to him because he announced his intention to marry the Princess Iole. The reason that Nessus' blood was poisonous is that the arrow of Hercules which which slew him was dipped in the blood of the Lernean Hydra, which was a fatal poison. The Hydra blood was so powerful that it made Nessus' blood poisonous as well.

    • One of the real Hercules' 12 labors was to capture the guard dog Cerberus and take him to King Eurystheus.

    • Greek Mythology: Minotaur In Greek Mythology, the Minotaur was the son of the Bull of Poseidon and the Cretan Queen Pasiphae. Minos had promised to sacrifice the Bull to Poseidon but when he substituted another the God took revenge by making Pasiphae fall in love with it. The Minotaur was eventually killed by the hero Theseus, a cousin of Hercules.

    • The death of Deianira and the kids being the impetus for Hercules's legendary journeys is based upon the death of Heracles's first wife Megara. After killing Megara and their children in a fit of madness, Heracles proceeded to redeem himself by undertaking the Twelve Labors. In the myth, Hera is still the root cause, having been the one to curse him with madness in the first place.
