  • Sai lets Hikaru know where to play by saying the letter than a number. The letter placement could be a number, the numbers only go from 1 to 19. The Letters go from A-T but I is not used as a Letter.

  • When Viz released this episode on DVD, including the preview sent out to subscribers, they had a giant logo that advertised Shonen Jump right after the title sequence in the opening. However, when this opening was played on Toonami Jetstream, the logo was removed. This will more than likely be the case with future episodes as well.

  • This episode kicked off Toonami Jetstream, Cartoon Network and Viz’s online broadband service. It premiered unofficially, with five other shows, on July 14, 2006. On July 17, 2006, the service officially launched. A DVD was released prior to the airing.

  • General Note on Airdates: Hikaru no Go does not air on general cable TV, thus all the airdates are that of its Japanese airing. Hikaru no Go does, however, air on Toonami Jetstream, an online anime streaming site brought to you by Viz and Cartoon Network. Regardless, Toonami Jetsream is an online broadband service and not cable TV. In addition, CN has stated that it most likely will never air on Toonami.

Allusions (3)

  • Honinbo Shusaku: Honinbo Shusaku (本因坊秀策), sometimes written as Hon'inbō Shūsaku, was born as Kuwabara Torajirō (桑原虎次郎) on June 6, 1829. He was a professional Go player and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Go players of all time. In fact, he was even nicknamed the "Invincible Shusaku" after he earned a perfect score for 19 consecutive wins in the annual castle games. Shusaku is one of two Go players that is hailed with the title of "Go Saint" or "Kisei". He died on August 10, 1862.
