  • show Description
  • In the Arizona Territory of the 1870s Hondo Lane, ex-Confederate Calvary Captain, works as a scout. Hondo is a loner who travels with a dog named Sam. Hondo had lived with the Apaches for a while and had married the daughter of their chief Vittoro. Hondo's Indian bride was slain in a massacre by the army and he still mourns her death. He now troubleshoots for the army, trying to avoid more killing as he faces land swindlers, renegade Indians and outlaws. The base of operations is Fort Lowell which is commanded by young Captain Richards who is watched over by Colonel Crook. Buffalo Baker is Hondo's fellow scout and friend. Angie Dow is a widow who runs the general store with the help of her nine-year-old son Johnny. She is Hondo's romantic interest. Many times Chief Vittoro and the Apaches assist Hondo and the Calvary with keeping the peace. This show is based on both the original Louis L'Amour novel and the John Wayne movie.moreless

    • Sam the dog injures his foot in the beginning of the episode and is left out of the main action.

    • In this episode we learn that Sam has a weakness for apple pie. During the course of the show he steals two of Angie Dow's freshly baked apple pies.

    • In this episode Mary Davis is going to offer Sam some food and Hondo tells her not to, explaining that Sam is not anyone's dog but fends for himself. Mrs. Davis asks him why Sam is always hanging around him to which Hondo replies he's never asked him.

    • When Hondo returns Angie at the end he is invited inside the Dow Trading Post to have some of the apple pies Mrs. Malcolm baked while watching Johnny Dow. In a previous episode, "Hondo And the Superstition Massacre", we saw that Sam the dog has a weakness for apple pie and Hondo tells him to stay outside because he's looking fat.

    Trivia (2)

    • When the Apaches stake Hondo out to die, you'd think they'd strip him naked in order to expose every inch of his body to the merciless rays of the sun and to the tormenting bites of crawling insects. Yet in this case they not only leave on his pants but his boots as well! And when one of them gets ready to pour hot coals on Hondo's bare chest, you'd think the Apache would do so slowly, a few coals at a time, in order to draw out the torture, rather than dumping them all at once. And why do they have their fire so far away from their victim? Why not build the fire between Hondo's spread-apart legs?
