House of Cards Gets an Early Season 3 Renewal from Netflix, Because Why Not?

Netflix has pulled a Starz and handed out an early renewal to one of its biggest hits. The streaming service and my source for late-night binges on The IT Crowd has renewed House of Cards for Season 3, ahead of the political drama's February 14 Season 2 premiere, says The Hollywood Reporter. But an early renewal isn't anything new for House of Cards; when the series was first announced, Netflix picked up two seasons right off the bat. No premiere date has been announced for Season 3, but 2015 is a safe bet.

With the exception of Starz (which seems to love renewing it series extra early), renewing shows in advance is a rarity. But Netflix don't play by the rules, man! And it's probably a better idea for Netflix than it is for traditional networks to order additional seasons upfront, because Netflix is all about stomping its feet on the ground and making the statement that it's a major player in the TV business. What better way to declare they're here to stay than to extend the star-studded, award-winning program that put 'em on the map?

House of Cards stars Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood, a Washington, D.C. politician with aspirations to make it to the top by any means necessary. Let's just say part of his campaign involves blood that isn't his. It's an adaptation of the British series of the same name, however, the British version ran for only four hour-long episodes. Do you think Netflix's House of Cards should be more of a closed-ended series, or are you happy to see it continue? Let's be democratic and put it to a vote:

Great News. This was the best new show of 2013. It would make watching season 2 even more enjoyable!

I have not looked forward to Valentines day as much as this year !

By the pacing, i'd say a 3rd season is a good idea. Maybe not 5 or 6, but certainly 3 or 4 will do just fine.

Really looking forward to the return of the dark political drama "House of Cards" :)

Great news, can run forever as far as I'm concerned!

Wasn't there news that Spacey and Wright were only going to do 2 seasons so they could get back to making movies? So much for that. Anyway this should be good news, there aren't too many shows that are best served with fewer than 3 seasons.

Yes! I love this show. While I do think it should go out before its plot becomes too stretched out, I think it could easily stay strong for at least 3 seasons (though I say that without knowing the direction that season 2 will take).

Anybody who thinks Frank getting more of a sociopath will not be believable should really watch the British miniseries.
