  • House (aka House MD), from executive producers Paul Attanasio, Katie Jacobs, David Shore, and Bryan Singer is a new take on mystery, where the villain is a medical malady and the hero is an irreverent, controversial doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients. Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is devoid of bedside manner and wouldn't even talk to his patients if he could get away with it. Dealing with his own constant physical pain, he uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a maverick physician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts have afforded him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he's a brilliant diagnostician who loves the challenges of the medical puzzles he must solve in order to save lives.moreless

    • Hugh Laurie: The ancient Greeks believed that swans only sing once at the point of their death--one beautiful last lament. Well, this is my last swan-like lament.

    • Hugh Laurie: I'm not saying that House, M.D. is the king of TV shows... wait a minute, no, actually I am saying that. But more importantly, if House is the king, then the people who make House are princes.

    • Hugh Laurie: And lo, the sets were good.

    • Hugh Laurie: Well, enough with the pampering. Making me look good takes real work.

    • House: House as a character is a strong cup of coffee. Every now and then he comes under attack.

    • Hugh Laurie: I love the world of House. It can go from the broadly comic to the angry satire to the sort of gut-wrenching tragedy to a horror movie, um, in the space of seconds.

    • Hugh Laurie: If you want to know people well, you should see them at 5:00 in the morning. You'll either like them more or less. With these people, it's definitely more.

    Trivia (341)

    • At the beginning of the episode, Coma Guy's hand repeatedly moves when House takes and replaces his drink cup.

    • When Rebecca is in the bus in the beginning her sweater is blue, but when she talks to her friend and the children it is green.

    • House states that it is 12:52 p.m. and he asks if there is a TV handy because in eight minutes General Hospital would begin. However his claim would mean that the soap starts at 1 p.m. but since House is set in New Jersey, the soap would actually air at 3 p.m.

    • It is strange that the doctors would have tracheotomy tools near the MRI scan room because of the incredibly strong magnet that is used to take the pictures. They would have to be special - no ferrous metal in them.

    • The bandages from Rebecca's tracheotomy are placed too high after the tube is removed.

    • Rekha Sharma's name is misspelled "Reika" in the closing credits.

    • House has changed his shoes in the time between when Wilson finds him hiding out in the clinic and during the DDX. At both points he has his feet up and you can see the soles are different.

    • When House is examining the patient in the clinic with the infected knee, he notes that the man is from Maplewood, NJ, and asks him why he's driven 70 miles to Princeton (ultimately correctly deducing that the man has sued every hospital and doctor in and around Maplewood). It's actually only about 40 miles from Maplewood to Princeton (or Plainsboro).

    Allusions (374)

    • Rebecca Adler The patient's name references the first Sherlock Holmes short story, A Scandal In Bohemia, in which the woman whom Holmes investigates is named Irene Adler.

    • Dr. Cuddy: You don't prescribe medicine based on guesses. At least we don't since Tuskegee and Mengele. Tuskegee refers to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932-1972), in which 399 black men were misled by researchers, who told them they were being treated for "bad blood" when in fact the men had syphilis and did not receive any treatment for it. Mengele was Josef Mengele, the most notorious of the Nazi doctors who carried out thousands of bizarre, painful, unnecessary and usually lethal medical experiments on prisoners in concentration camps (1943-1945).

    • Dr. House: To quote the philosopher Jagger, "you can't always get what you want." The "philosopher" in question is Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones with the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

    • Dr. House: Is there a TV anywhere? General Hospital starts in eight minutes. General Hospital is a daytime soap that's been running since April of 1963. It currently airs on the ABC network.

    • House: General Hospital's on channel 6.
General Hospital is a very popular soap on ABC, and is also House's favorite show. Also, in central New Jersey, channel 6 is in fact an ABC station.

    • House: Wabbits.
Referencing Elmer Fudd of Looney Tunes.

    • House: Writing down what we already know to be read by nobody. Pretty sure Dante would agree that qualifies as useless. Wilson and House are alluding to Dante Alighieri's poem The Divine Comedy, in which the main character travels through nine circles of hell.

    • House recommending cigarettes The clinic patient, Marvin, dressed as Santa Claus, who is prescribed cigarettes by House for his inflammatory bowel. The whole thing is very reminiscent of an old Fry & Laurie first series sketch called "Doctor Tobacco." Laurie goes to see the "doctor" (Stephen Fry) for an examination. He complains of having trouble breathing at night and tightness in his chest. Fry tells him to smoke a cigarette twenty times a day, "ideally moving on to thirty or forty." Laurie complains that they cause lung cancer and emphysema. Fry dismisses the idea. They argue back and forth until Laurie insists that he'd like a second opinion. Fry offers that they're also cheap, nutritious and stylish. And if he's interested in a third opinion, they're also soothing, harmless and sexy. Turns out, Fry wasn't a doctor after all but a tobacconist.
