's 2014 Post-Upfronts Questionnaire: Which New Shows Look the Best and the Worst?

By Tim Surette

May 20, 2014

Now that the Upfronts are over and we've all had a taste of the networks' new schedules and shows, it's time to jump to conclusions and pick our favorite new serie of the 2014-2015 season based solely on trailers.

I've surveyed the staff for their thoughts on the new shows, and tallied their votes for best-looking and worst-looking candidates via secret ballot in order to take the temperature taking of what might resonate with today's viewers, as executives like to say.

Check out our results below, and play along at home in the polls and the comments!

Note: If you haven't yet watched the trailers in question, here they are:

ABC      |      CBS      |      The CW      |      Fox      |      NBC

Tim: Battle Creek

Best-looking new CW show

Nick: The Flash

Best-looking new Fox show

Nick: Gotham, although we know that Donal Logue, great as he may be, is cursed

MaryAnn: Gracepoint and The Last Man on Earth

Andy: Empire or Mulaney

Noel: The Last Man on Earth

Ryan: Hieroglyph

Cory: A to Z

Noel: Constantine. I guess. Eh.

Ryan: Bad Judge

Cory: The Flash

MaryAnn: Gracepoint

Andy: The Flash

Noel: Madame Secretary

Ryan: Hieroglyph

Kaitlin: The Flash, I guess?

Jen: Marry Me, I guess? This is a tough slate for the not-super-into-the-genre-stuff folks in the crowd...

Tim: I abstain! Okay fine, ummm, American Crime?

Worst-looking new show overall

Nick: The McCarthys (Laurie Metcalf, you're better than this!), though Selfie is a close second

Cory: Jane the Virgin

MaryAnn: Manhattan Love Story or Jane the Virgin

Andy: Stalker

Noel: Selfie and Stalker

Ryan: Stalker

Kaitlin: Manhattan Love Story

Jen: Selfie

Tim: The Mysteries of Laura, State of Affairs, Selfie, Stalker, Cristela, most of them, really...

    9 months later... Oh well.
And some shows, like Wayward Pines, have not even aired yet. Technically in the 2014-15 season I suppose BUT....

I think it's based on default. They hated the other shows so much that anything else has to be better.

Scorpion looks way better than I'd thought it would, same as The Whispers. The Flash looks every bit as good as I'd hoped, but I'm not as impressed with Constantine as I'd greatly hoped I'd be. Sure, it looks plenty better than the misguided film adaptation, but still doesn't seem to draw nearly as much from the comics as it should.

I'll definately add "Gotham" and "The Flash" this season... But after reading this article, I started thinking about adding "Galvant", "Scorpion", "The Whispers" and "Constantine" (but they have to be so good in order to add my current list of 27 ongoing shows)

Superheroes and similar things are REALLY popular in America it seems, and yeah among all other people here too. Interesting.

My first spontanous choices although i have not seen all the trailers or read what every show is about:

Last Man on Earth (new idea for once, not many of those)
    Mulaney (maybe funny?)
Backstrom (swedish version of this guy is kinda funny)
Battle Creek (Vince Gilligan made BB so maybe...?)

  • Gully_Foyle May 22, 2014

Superhero stories have always been popular and not just in America, but transfering stories from dead trees to the big screen has always been problematic. It took 20 years before the technology was good enough to catch up to Watchmen. And because TV has smaller budgets to work with only recently have they been able to do superheroes "right", but now that TV can do superheroes expect to see them around for a long time.

The Whispers and Wayward Pines have potential to be good shows, but unfortunately also potential to be bad because they can drift into some silly horror territory especially the latter. I watched a great pilot recently "The After", it was awesome until it suddenly became something very un-awesome for a similar reason.

  • KLTR May 21, 2014

Although I'm all for The Flash as Best Looking Show Overall, I'm kind of missing Gotham on that list, which comes in as a close second to me.

  • Cineking May 21, 2014

I'm looking forward to Mulaney. I know most people hate multicamera sitcoms these days, but this one looks funny. And, obviously, I'm excited for all comic book adaptations.

Selfie looks terrible, but I'll watch it because Karen Gillan :\

  • msbis May 21, 2014

How is Red Band Society not listed here or picked by anyone? It looked so good. Plus, I'm actually looking forward to Selfie.
Apart from those obv ... The Flash, Constantine, Gotham, Empire, Hieroglyph as well as iZombie and The Messengers although no preview is available for either of those!
