  • Chance: You did something you regret, we are hard wired to do things we regret. It ain't going to change, it's nothing to be afraid of and its certainly not a reason to die.

  • Chance: People have secrets and secrets are dangerous, so what are you keeping from me?

  • (While walking through the train station towards some Japanese gentlemen) Chance: Let's go over the cover again. Who am I? Stephanie: You're Tony Graham, my new translator.... While we're on the subject, you are fluent in Japanese, right? Chance: Guess we'll find out, won't we? (Chance has a long Japanese conversation with one of the gentlemen)

  • Hollis: Blending in. You have no idea what it's like, always blending in. You forget who you are. Eventually you start to forget who you ever were. They push you and push you further into the margins, treat you like dirt, take away your manhood. Make you small. Somebody had to do something about it.

  • Hollis: You just committed suicide for that snake, that rat. You realize that? Chance: Well, first of all I don't think you can be both of those things at the same time.

  • Stephanie: What did you just say? Chance: Oh, he wanted to know how I recognized that his dialect was Satsuma-Ben. Told him my grandfather was stationed in Tokyo. After the war, dated a steward from a small fishing village on the island of Kyushu. My grandfather sponsored him when he came to the U.S. for college. Became a friend of the family and taught me Japanese. Stephanie: Wow--that's... is that true? Chance: No.

  • Guerrero: Afraid we're at an impasse. Latino Thug: We're at a what? Guerrero: Impasse. It means we disagree without prospect of resolution. Latino Thug: You know, we came here to explain it to you, but you don't seem to be getting it. Maybe the three of us can take a little walk out back to the alley. We can explain it a little better. So there's no... impasse. Guerrero: I got to warn you guys, if this gets violent, I'm gonna fight back. Latino Thug: You think you're gonna fight back? Guerrero: All right, maybe fight back's a little misleading. I'll take the beating 'cause that's all you two amateurs are cleared to do. And then one night soon, I'm gonna break into your houses and kill each of you in your sleep. I'll probably start with you, Alfredo. That way Steven here can have a few extra days with Marla and the girls. It's only fair. Latino Thug: How do you know my name? Guerrero: Your employer keeps information on a drive he thinks is secure. It isn't. Shall we? (the men quickly exit)

  • Stephanie: A vest? You wore a vest? Where's my vest? Chance: I'm your vest.

Trivia (24)

  • Alessandro Juliani's character Phil Tennant is referred to as "Steve" in the end credits.

  • The airplane Chance has to fly should never fly in reality since it would never pass international aviation-safety rules. On one hand there are no redundant systems (the fire on board destroys a system and it is gone for good), on the other hand all key-systems run through the same circuit (the fire destroys a junction and besides some aviation-systems also the radio is destroyed).

  • When Aaron's nose starts bleeding, the amount of blood on his nose changes several times.

  • The abbot was oddly unperturbed that two different men, who it became clear weren't monks, were in their midst without explanation or being asked to leave.

  • It's absurd that a worldly, experienced, operative like Chance would believe for a second that all they would have to do is turn over the item the thieves wanted to them, and they would then let everybody go.

  • During the fight in the car, the car not only fails to slow down, but continues to accelerate. Despite the fact that nobody has their foot on the accelerator.

  • Near the end when Layla meets Martin and tells him she is NiteOwl, she produces a large bottle filled with water for his goldfish. As the view goes to a close-up of the fish actually being poured into the bottle, there are only about two inches of water in the bottle. The next shot shows Layla holding up the jar with the fish and it is then full again.

  • Chance's cover ID, C.C. Baxter, is the lead character, played by Jack Lemmon, from Billy Wilder's 1960 film The Apartment.

  • Chance: You both liked the girl in the jumpsuit on Buck Rogers. Chance is referencing Erin Gray, who played Colonel Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. For the three years the show aired from 1979 to 1981, Ms. Gray in her jumpsuits were a popular series of posters for adolescent boys.

  • Gray: See, the Anti-Monitor wants to destroy all the Earths in the Multiverse, right? The comic books (or rather their content) Gray and the others discuss in the library are part of the 12-issue Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) maxi-series, which DC used to remove the concept of a Multiverse from the DC Universe. This involved the deaths of superheroes such as Supergirl and The Flash. The Flash incarnation Gray is talking about is the Barry Allen character. He was resurrected in the comics a few months before this episode premiered, at the hands of writer Geoff Johns.

  • Baptiste: And then you have to become all Dudley Do-Right. Referencing Dudley Do-Right, the dim-witted but heroic Canadian Mountie immortalized in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1959-1964), and later spun off into his own show and a live-action movie. Dudley fights against Snidely Whiplash with the assistance of Horse, his horse.

  • Guerrero: My heart grew three sizes that day.

Referencing the classic Dr. Seuss story and subsequent television adaptation, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch is an unpleasant grouch who hates the holidays, and resolves to steal Christmas. When he steals all of the holiday presents and food but almost loses them over a cliff, his heart "grows three that day" with love and he finds the strength to save them.

  • Ames: Enough of the whole Don Corleone thing. Referencing the ruling patriarch of the Corleone crime family in the Godfather movies. • Ames: Afterschool Special enough for you?
