  • Quotes (4)

    • Lucy: This is a pretty pickle. We've been open two whole days and haven't seen a customer. Ethel: We made five sales. Lucy: Yes, to each other. And I think we should have investigated our credit before we opened those charge accounts.

    • Ethel: How about we call it "Ethelu's?" Lucy: Ethelu's? Ethel: Yeah! Lucy: It doesn't have a nice easy flow, a nice pleasing sound! Ethel: What would you suggest? Lucy: Something that rolls right off your tongue, like "Lucyeth's." Ethel: "Lucyeth's?" You couldn't keep that on your tongue if you tried!

    • Ethel: That's where I've bought all my dresses since we've been married...All THREE of them.

    • Lucy: (Answering the apartment phone) Ricardo residence, this is the maid speaking. Mr. Ricardo? Yes, he's here but he doesn't speak any English. You don't speak Spanish, do you? Oh, you do?

    Notes (1)

    • This episode introduced us to the Mayer twins who would play little Ricky for the next three seasons.

    Trivia (2)

    • How did Lucy and Ethel know Mrs. Hansen was just making up a story to get an extra $1,500 from them? They leave right before she tells her two decoy customers the truth. Then later, Lucy tells Ethel she'll use the same gag Mrs. Hansen used on them.

    • On the day this episode was to be filmed before a live audience, the Los Angeles area newspapers featured headlines that Lucille Ball had been questioned recently by the House Unamerican Activities Committee. The testimony before HUAC was from a most innocent circumstance from some 20 years before concerning her elderly grandfather, Fred C. Hunt, whom Lucille Ball had always considered to be a father figure. She had been cleared of any wrongdoing by HUAC but new newspapers wouldn't print that fact till the next day. In fact, plainclothes police officers were sitting in the stands in case anything got out of hand at the taping. That night, Desi Arnaz, during his usual audience warm-up, made a fine speech asking the audeince to wait till the next day to reserve judgement about what they may have read about his wife. When he introduced Lucille Ball the crowd roard with applause in support for her. "We love you, Lucy!" On with the show!

    Allusions (1)

    • When the girls are trying to pick a name for their new shop, Ethel suggests "Ethelu." This could be a possible reference to Lucy and Desi's production company: Desilu.
