  • Joan: Think after all these years of marriage he could run off with another woman? Drop me just like that? Aunt Vera: If I were you I’d demand at least two weeks notice. Joan: If I was his pet dog I’d get more consideration. Before he left me he’d have to first place me with a nice family.

  • Aunt Vera: Joan, for heaven sakes, how long is Brad going to be gone? Joan: Just two days. Why? Aunt Vera: You’re packing like he’s leaving for good. Joan: Brad’s very fussy. He likes a clean change of shirt. Aunt Vera: He’ll be able to change every five minutes. Joan: (smelling a bottle of shaving lotion) Oh, I just love this shaving lotion of Brad’s. (holds it out for Aunt Vera to smell) When he wears it he’s just irresistible. (puts the lid back on it and puts it in the suitcase) Aunt Vera: I think it’s just as well if he does change his shirt every five minutes. Joan: Huh? Aunt Vera: If he’s doing that, he won’t be doing anything else. Joan: Well, Aunt Vera, what on earth are you talking about? Why shouldn’t Brad have fun with the fellows in his class? Aunt Vera: Joan, there were also girls in his class.

  • (in her daydream) Joan (on the phone): Oh, hiya, Pres. What? U.S. Treasury is a little low and you’re worried about the budget? Two billion be enough? Glad to do it, glad to. Oh, uh, by the way, one little formality, uh, what are you putting up for collateral? Oh, I see, you’ll put up Texas. Well, I’m sorry. I’m already holding Texas for what the last boy borrowed.

  • Joan (thinking): Imagine me, head of the largest cosmetic firm in the world, sitting in my office, the largest office in the world. What power I’d have, the whole country at my feet, the largest feet in the world.

  • Joan: Well, if I had had half the chance, I could have done just as well as those other girls. I was just as smart in school as they were. Brad (laughs): Now, Joanie. Joan: Well, I was too! Now, you take Minnie Shultz, for instance. If it hadn’t been for me, she would have gotten the lowest mark in Algebra class. Brad: You helped her? Joan: Yes. I got the lowest mark.

  • Joan: Don’t you touch me! Not after the nasty thing you did to me! Brad: Nasty thing? What did I do? Joan: You married me!

  • Joan: (imitating her old teacher) Joanie, you’re going to be a dummy all your life.

  • Joan: (talking about a girl she went to high school with) She was the flighty one of the bunch. Brad: Uh, what were you of the bunch? Joan: Me? Oh, I was the normal one. (Brad chokes on his coffee)
