  • Man has searched the skies for centuries and has never come up with conclusive evidence to prove the existence of other forms of intelligent life. What if we have been looking in the wrong place? What if there were other forms of intelligent life already living among us? What if perceived natural disasters were really diversions created to conceal clandestine alien activities? What if is no longer an if. When a small town at the edge of the Florida Everglades is threatened by a raging hurricane, U.S. Park Ranger Russell Varon must go to great lengths to protect the small community and his family safe. During the storm his young daughter claims to have seen mysterious lights, seemingly unaffected by the gale-force winds, floating near the water. Varon dismisses the sighting, but begins to wonder if there really was some truth to the story after his missing ex-wife turns up naked and her memory of the storm is completely gone. While the community begins to clean up after the storm and piece their lives back together, Varon begins to investigate the strange happenings as he tries to make sense of what is happening. Something is happening something that will change the fate everyone.moreless

    • Rose: Mommy? You smell different.

    • Rose: Daddy? Did you see the lights?

    • Dave: "Don't let them in," Paxton kept saying. "Don't let them in." Who do you think they were talking about, the Cubans?

    • Russell: I don't care if you're crazy, Dave. I care about how all this affects my family.

    • Dave: Fight the power, Larkin! Fight the power!

    • Larkin: Dave, you're my brother and I love you, but I'm tired, I'm pregnant, and you're medicated. Will you please go back to your room?

    • Tom tells Russell that he better Shock the Monkey. Shock the Monkey is a 1982 song by Peter Gabriel.

    • Episode Title: Unnatural Selection The title of this episode is from the term "natural selection", which is used in science to describe how certain species survive while others die out.

    • Derek calls Kira and Jesse as Marcia & Greg. This is in reference to step-siblings on the infamous Brady Bunch.

    • Dave refers to the 1972 movie Deliverance in two separate scenes. In the swamp near the site where Kira's mother died in 1996 (her father Sheriff Underlay was the only survivor on the plane), Dave begins mimicking the Duelling Banjos song from Deliverance. Later at the campsite, Dave tells Jesse and Russell "This is just like Deliverance." In the movie Deliverance, four urban men go on a rafting trip down a backwoods river where they encounter hostile country folk. The movie received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and John Boorman was nominated for Best Director.

    • At one point in this episode, Dave says he expected the survivors group to be a bunch of 'Kool Aid drinkers'. This is a reference to the murder/suicide of over 900 members of the Peoples Temple, at Jonestown. This is when the Peoples Temple, established an agricultural project. They were a religious group based in California which moved to Guyana in the late 1970s to establish a religious utopia. On November 18, 1978 a U.S. Congressman was assasinated, along with four other individuals, at a jungle airstrip; these tragic killings were followed by the mass suicides/murders of 900 men, women, and children by ingesting potassium cyanide mixed into a vat of punch (Kool-Aid) and tranquilizers.

    • Dave repeatedly refers to the survivors group, as Pod People. This is a reference to the 1956 movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers about a small-town community where people start to be replaced by alien duplicates. The movie was also remade in 1978.

    • Dave refers to the Village of the Damned. Village of the Damned is a Sci-Fi Horror movie that was originally released in 1960. John Carpenter remade the movie in 1995.

    • The gruesome final scene is very similar to the real-life fate of Daniel Rudolph. He is the brother of the infamous "Olympic bomber," Eric Rudolph who pled guilty to bombing abortion clinics, a gay nightclub and the Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. When Eric was a fugitive from the FBI, Daniel videotaped himself as he cut off his own hand with an electric saw. The hand was later reattached. This episode puts an interesting twist on the tale. Eric Rudolph opposed the authority of the government. Tom Underlay is the symbol of authority in Homestead as the sheriff.
