    • Jake: Are you aware your ten dollar dog is drolling all over my fourteen hundred dollar Italian chair?
McCabe: Max is not a ten dollar dog. I gave the pound fifteen dollars. (Jake looks at him) Well, maybe it was twelve fifty.

    • Officer: You really like to play cop, don't you?
McCabe: If I did, I'd still be on the force.

    • (Jake walks in his apartment)
Derek: (Petting Max) Hi Jake. (McCabe walks out of the kitchen)
      Jake: Is everyone comfortable?
McCabe: You're out of diet soda.
Jake: I'll have to remember to buy some. Think i'll change the locks while I'm at it.

    • Jake: Look, you hungry? I'm goign to make some pasta.
McCabe: Well, ah, as a matter of fact, we already ate. Um.. Why don't you have a nice, um , nice salad.
      Jake: Why?
McCabe: Because we ate all of your pasta. (as he hurries to the door with Max) Goodnight Jake.

    • (Jake has come home to find McCabe, Max and Derek in his apartment)
Jake: Is there a reason for this visit or am I being punished?

    • Jake: You have any leads? I mean, this guy's got to make a mistake sooner or later. McCabe: He already has. He made me mad.

    • McCabe: Are you telling me that a half million dollars is gone?
Derek: Sir, he didn't exactly say gone, did you?
Jake: JL, look at it as proof that he's crooked.
      McCabe: Proof? Proof!
      Jake: Yes.
McCabe: You offered the man money, you claimed to have embezzled and he takes it. The only thing that's proof of is my stupidity in trusting you with a half m..mil.. I can't even bring myself to say the words.

    • McCabe: You want what?
Jake: A half of a million dollars, five hundred thousand...
McCabe: (Shouting) I heard that. I just can't beleive it. Have you lost your mind?
Jake: No. I haven't lost my mind!
Derek: Mr. McCabe, sir, shouting is bad for a .....
McCabe: (interrupting and shouting) I'm not shouting, this is a easonable discussion. Or it would be if you weren't making unreasonable requests.
Jake: Look, I need a half million dollars if I'm going to get Glen to let me in on hte plan. It's as simple as that.

    • McCabe: Never laugh at live dragons. Jagger: McCabe's Law. Actually, McCabe is quoting from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. After his parting statement to the dragon Smaug got him scorched, hobbit Bilbo Baggins said to himself, "Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" which became a saying that later passed into a proverb.

  • A hybrid of sorts between "Matlock" and "Nero Wolfe," "Jake and the Fatman" is light-hearted B-movie inspired mystery.
