  • Episode Description
  • After Price discovers Joan holding an empty egg carton near his freshly egged car, he wrongly assumes she's the culprit and punishes her with a weekend of community service. Without more direction from God than to rise above the injustice, Joan tries to figure out if she's meant to help a bitter former nun, Lilly, who is overseeing the service project, or one of the social outcasts who are serving as a result of their own offenses. Meanwhile, Joan's also upset that her reluctance to begin a sexual relationship with Adam is driving a wedge between them. Also, Adam meets a troubled artist at the community center; Joan gets Luke a job at the bookstore; Kevin has another car accident.moreless

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (5)

    • Kevin: You should look where you're going. Lily: Oh, just relax, you're crippled already. Kevin: Nice...

    • Steinholz: What are we anywhere? Compared to the universe, we're nothing. A speck, a moment of glory. The Arcadia College Award – what is that? Luke: They also got dinner at Don Thornberry's. Steinholz: Oh. Their rib-eye is amazing.

    • Steinholz: You know nothing about science. Luke: Hey! Hey! You are patronizing the wrong geek, grampa!

    • Joan: You got a prize... Luke: Vampire teeth. One's broken. Story of my life.

    • Bonnie: I don't paint kittens... unless they're dead.

    Notes (3)

    • New God: Trash Man God.

    Trivia (1)

    • Big Tough Guy God says that in A Tale of Two Cities, Sidney Carton says "Tis a far, far better thing..." Actually, he thinks it - "If he had given an utterance to his [thoughts], and they were prophetic, they would have been these..." By definition, shouldn't God know the book perfectly?

    Allusions (4)

    • Helen hands Bonnie a book with paintings of Hieronymus or 'Jeroen' Bosch. Jeroen Bosch was a renaissance painter from the Netherlands famous for his weird paintings about horrendous torture, carnal mutilations, flying fish, the fires of hell, and the sinister depths of the human imagination. He lived from 1450-1516. Not a lot is known about him but unlike most famous Dutch painters he is not from The Hague or Amsterdam; he lived in Den Bosch: a small town in Holland that still exists today.

    • Joan: Everything Dickenson wrote can be sung to the tune of Yellow Rose of Texas. The reason this works is that traditional poetry was written in meter, and there were only a few meters to choose from. If a poem and a tune use the same meter, the poem could be sung to the tune, even if the mood was inappropriate. Emily Dickenson always used the same meter, so all her poems could be matched to Yellow Rose. The TV series Babylon 5 used the same joke. A footnote: there is one Dickenson poem that can't be sung to "Yellow Rose": "Wild Nights--Wild Nights!". It works much better with the Bonanza theme.

    • Helen: It's community service, Will, not This Old House. Referring to the PBS series about repairing old houses, generally in the New England area.

    • Lily: Watching Stargate. . . The SciFi show Stargate SG-1 started as a movie, Stargate, in 1994, became a TV series in 1997 on Showtime and moved to SciFi channel starting in its 6th season. Series star Michael Welch guest starred in the Season Seven episode "Fragile Balance". Stargate SG-1 aired opposite of the second season of Joan Of Arcadia.
