  • Quotes (11)

    • Helen: You didn't destroy Lars. That makes one of us a decent person. Joan: I had it in me to do it. I felt it. Helen: What were you gonna do? Joan: Lars is... gay. Helen: And you were going to use that to... Joan: Mom, it would have been so easy. But then... in my head I kept seeing him, looking at me... so scared, ya know. Big, strong Lars, scared and confused. And I've been then there, like... like, all the time. And it was like we weren't really different people, 'cause someplace we aren't. Why is that so hard to remember? Helen: I don't know.

    • Locksmith God: Mankind lives in a prison of its own making – but you always call on me for the keys.

    • Joan: Didn't you take history? Rocker Dude God: I created history.

    • Joan: Oh, I can't watch. (Brian gets beaten up) It's too horrible. Rocker Dude God: Multiply that by six billion and you'll know what I go through every day.

    • Joan: Elizabeth Goetzman - what about her? Grace: Needs elephant tranquilizers.

    • When Joan gets the VOTE FOR LARS button she receives it with her left hand..but then the camera does a close up and she has it with her right hand. A second later she's still holding the button with her left hand..but turns into her right hand again a second later.

    Allusions (3)

    • Lars: Care for a Lars bar? The name "Lars bar" is an allusion to the popular chocolate candy, Mars Bar.

    • Luke: We need Brobdingnagian. Brobdingnag is a fictional country of giants in the 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels. Everyone in that country is approximately 60-72 feet tall. "Brobdingnagian" has since entered the English language as an adjective denoting great size. Coincidentally or not, Mary Steenburgen (Helen), and her real-life husband Ted Danson, appeared in a miniseries version of the story, Gulliver's Travels.

    • Judith: You're not a wartime consiglieri, Jo-Jo.... been watching The Godfather on cable.
A reference to the The Godfather movie. A consiglierli is an advisor/counselor, usually associated with organized crime.
