  • 14 year-old Sumimura Yoshimori is the desendant of a monster exterminator, also known as a Kekkaishi. Unfortunately, he is not the only one. Yumikura Tokine, his older, female rival is also related to the Kekkaishi. They battle monsters and demons, protecting their lands and people, all the while vying for the title of rightful heir to the Kekkaishi bloodline.

    • The basic abilities of a Kekkaishi are explained in this episode, and are as follows: Houi - Engulf - Locks on to the enemy. Jouso - Cornerstone - Creates the basis for the kekkai (barrier). Ketsu - Bind - Creates the kekkai. Kai - Release - Disables the kekkai. Metsu - Destruction - Destroys everything within the kekkai. Tenketsu - Heavenly Hole - Tenketsu is actually the name of the staff they use to perform this ability which sucks the shards of the Ayakashi into the otherworld.

    • The named Ayakashi that appeared in this episode were: Tatou (Multiple heads) - A monster that uses its sharp beak and powerful legs as weapons. Yumigane - A monster that becomes a full battle type after transforming from its child form.

    • The majority of this episode was actually a 5-year back-flash to show character development between the two main characters, and the reason behind why Yoshimori is so insistent on protecting Tokine.

    • Shikigami are introduced in this episode. They are sheets of paper that can be used by kekkaishi to take a certain shape to do work, or to protect someone away from the kekkaishi. Among weaker kekkaishi the shapes are usually little white pudgy human shaped figures, and among higher level kekkaishi they are usually exact replica's of the kekkaishi themselves.

    • The named Ayakashi that appeared in this episode were: Tsuchigama - A monster that manipulates earth.

    • The urakai are introduced in this episode. They are a mysterious group of "users" who are people that have individually specific supernatural abilities.

    • No named Ayakashi appeared in this episode but instead and Ogre: Yoki - His movements are slow, his tail is fast. And his user: Kasuga Yomi - An Ogre User, and member of the Urakai.

    • It is confirmed in this episode that one of Yoshimori's classmates "Kanda Yurina" has the ability to see ghosts, and sense energies.
