  • In which nothing is quite as it seems in terms of an heroic firefighter and his activism.

    • (Large conference room at One Police Plaza. The camera pans over two file folders, a thick one with Logan's picture pinned to it; an almost empty one with Wheeler's picture. She is pacing restlessly. He is relaxed.) Mike Logan: Never go on before the commissioner? It's kind of like a departmental hearing, with a few more ribbons. (Wheeler exhales and pokes at the table. Logan looks at her.) Mike Logan: Wheeler. Don't tell me you've never had a departmental hearing. (Wheeler smiles weakly at Logan)

    • (In the hospital, after the brawl.)
Mike Logan: Hand me my pants, will you?
Megan Wheeler: Logan, I'm really sorry that...
Mike Logan: Wheeler, two things that I don't need right now. Another fight, or an apology.

    • Charlie Hugo: Screw you! Mike Logan: I don't know about you, but I don't go that way.

    • Danny Ross: Gay rage. Old school police term. We don't use it anymore, and I don't want to hear it from either of you, but back in the day, that's what everyone called it. The strength of a man with the hysteria of a woman.

    • Megan Wheeler: If he was seeing someone, the nearest doughnut theory says she lives near the firehouse. Mike Logan: The what? Megan Wheeler: Men are lazy. Even if there's a good meal across town, they'll usually just reach for the nearest doughnut.

    Trivia (1)

    • Goof: When Logan interrogates Charlie Hugo, he mentions that Hugo and Duffy had "...Two plane tickets to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the only state that allows men to get married." At the time the episode is set, Massachusetts law only extended same-sex marriage to residents of Massachusetts or Rhode Island or to couples who declared an intent to take up permanent residence in Massachusetts. Even if the situation had been as it was presented, Duffy was still legally married to his wife and bigamy laws would thus prevent his marrying anyone else, man or woman, without a divorce, even if the other conditions of Massachusetts law were met.

    Allusions (1)

    • The title of this episode, "Maltese Cross", is a reference to what the writers believe is the firefighter's badge. The Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. It originated as an badge of honor that was awarded to the Knights of St. John when they fought the Saracens for the Holy Land. The firefighters' emblem is a cross of Saint Florian not a Maltese cross, although they are routinely confused because of their similarity.
