  • A serial killing spree, and a full out manhunt. What's better for a season finale?

  • Quotes (11)

    • Daniel Varney: I have to ask you something. Olivia Benson: What? Daniel Varney: Why didn't you shoot me? Olivia Benson: Because I didn't want to hurt you. Daniel Varney: But you must. Olivia Benson: I must what, Daniel? I don't understand. Daniel Varney: Kill me. Please. Please. I can't take any more pain.

    • (Fin and Munch go to get some sleep.) Elliot Stabler: You, too. Olivia Benson: Oh, no. I'm too pissed to sleep.

    • Elliot Stabler (when asked how it was going): Ah, 500 calls since 11:00 and more sightings than Elvis. Wanna trade places?

    • Elliot Stabler: It's four o'clock in the morning. Why don't you guys get some shut eye?
Fin Tutuola: You don't have to ask me twice.

    • Fin Tutuola: These people have a serious problem.
      John Munch: Yeah, they're scared.

    Notes (2)

    • A deleted scene from this episode reveals Benson and Stabler were promoted to Detective Second Grade and Detective First Grade, respectively, due to their work on this case.

    • In at least one scene, you can see a USMC tattoo on Chris Meloni's right forearm, which is later explained in episode #101. The USMC tattoo is not real (the crucifix on his shoulder is).

    Allusions (1)

    • Having the serial killer slitting prostitutes' throats down to the spine and eviscerating their genitalia is based on Jack the Ripper's modus operandi.

At the end of the episode, A.D.A. Alexandra Cabot gives her terms for not proceeding with an investigation and additional charges against the insurance company. They are:

      1) The company will start reporting all communicable disease to the health department,

      2) Settle with the families of the victims and the wife of Daniel Varney when they sue.

I'm really surprised she didn't include (a third item) having the company report any past communicable diseases to the health department. Why? There could be a second, third, fourth, who knows how many others out there cases / people similar to Daniel Varney. Who knows how soon their brains might stop functioning properly and thus allow them to kill in a similar way.

I wonder how the writers missed that point? I guess they were looking at so many details this one slipped through the cracks.

It might be nice to see a future episode exploit this "flaw," but I'm not sure how one could do it and still keep it fresh and not seem like doing the episode over again.
