    • Jack McCoy: (Cross examining the defendant) In fact, as far as I can tell, the first time you mentioned this problem to anyone was you raised it as a defense for killing Donna McClean. Vanessa Galliano: Objection! Jack McCoy: That's alright. She doesn't have to respond. We all know the answer.

    • (Defense attorney examines the defendant's ex-husband) Vanessa Galliano: Let me get this straight, Mr. McClean. You left your wife, the mother of your children, by your own testimony depressed and emotionally traumatized by the events of 9/11, so you could marry her newly rich best friend, your best friend's widow. Ed McClean: It wasn't like that. Vanessa Galliano: Wasn't it?

    • Serena Southerlyn: (Talking about the Collette Connolly case) You don't think that there is some room for leniency here, Jack? Jack McCoy: Absolutely, from the judge, at sentencing.

    • Joe Fontana: When you were a kid, did you ever call your dad by his first name? Ed Green: Not unless I wanted to smell the Aqua Velva on the back of his hand.

    • Jack McCoy: It's a run-of-the-mill murder with a headline defense.

    Notes (1)

    • Before the opening credits, a title card is shown with the chiming noise. This rarely occurs on the series.

    Allusions (4)

    • This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash.

    • Firefighter: They were a regular Frick and Frack.
Frick and Frack were the stage names of Swiss comedic skaters Werner Groebli and Hansruedi Mauch, who came to the US and became famous performing in the Ice Follies. Their names became synonymous with people who shared a close work partnership, becoming a common slang term for such a pair. Mauch died in 1979; Groebli continued performing as Mr. Frick for many years before retiring from skating.

    • Ed Green: She doesn't look like Marion Jones to me.
Marion Jones is a former American track star and Olympic gold medalist. Unfortunately, she has recently admitted to using steroids and been forced to return her Olympic medals. Green was saying that Collette Conolly would have had to run extremely fast for her alibi to hold up.

    • The title of this episode, The Dead Wives Club, is a play on The First Wives Club, a novel by Olivia Goldsmith about a group of 'first wives' who get even with their ex-husbands. It was later made into a movie starring Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn as the vengeful ex-wives.
