  • show Description
  • Inspired by a real-life behavioral scientist, this FOX drama tells the tale of a deception expert who helps uncover the truth for the FBI, local police, law firms, corporations, and individuals. Dr. Cal Lightman and his team are effectively human polygraph machines, and no truth can be concealed from them. The Lightman Group is headed by Dr. Cal Lightman and his partner Dr. Gillian Foster who is a gifted psychologist. She brings balance to the partnership by thinking about the overall picture while Lightman focuses on the details. Together they make an invincible team with insight into human behavior. Eli Loker is the lead researcher, who believes in radical honesty. He often gets in trouble for saying what he thinks. Ria Torres is one of the few "naturals" in the field of deception detection. She has an untapped ability to read people that makes her a force to be reckoned with the right training. Created by Sam Baum, Lie to Me is executive-produced by Baum, Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Steve Maeda. The series is produced by Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television.moreless

    • Cal: (to Gillian) Politician. That's all you. Charge him by the lie. You can retire tomorrow.

    • Lightman: Just getting in, Loker? Loker: Yeah, I got piss-drunk last night with my roommate, and I was just lying in bed this morning thinking how nasty hot Nancy Grace is, and just trying to decide if I was gonna come in at all cause it's not like there's anyone in here to fantasize about. Foster: No offence taken. Loker: I don't go for married women.

    • Baldridge: So Dr. Lightman just assumes you're a liar if you're a politician? Gillian: He assumes you're a liar if you're a Homo sapien.

    • Eli: I would like to sleep with you. Cal: Ah, Eli Loker, Ria Torres. He's harmless, just always speaks the truth about what's on his mind. What do you call it again? Eli: Radical honesty.

    • Gillian: Do you still have that note, that I brought you? I want it for my office. Cal: (handing over the note) You really are a pack rat. Gillian: You could have just told me what this was for. Cal: No. You're a terrible liar. Gillian: Normal people think that's a good thing.

    • Weil: You haven't done enough muck-raking for one day? Ria: Sir. We don't think you were doing anything sexual at that club, because, I believe this escort, Melissa, who you paid for time with- Weil: What about her? Ria: She's your daughter.

    • Cal: The only way three people can keep a secret is if two of them are dead.

    • Cal: What's your content analysis of the mother? Gillian: She was definitely concealing something. When I asked her about Miss McCartney, she started referring to her as 'that woman'. Cal: As in, 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky'.

    Trivia (23)

    • GOOF: In Lightman's office, there is a picture of his daughter behind his desk. If you look closely you'll notice it's not of Hayley McFarland. It's actually Kay Panabaker, who was original cast in the role and shot an unaired pilot.

    • The song playing at the very end of the episode is "Easier To Lie" by Aqualung.

    • The pictures of Dr. Lightman are modified from pictures taken on a 1930 expedition to New Guinea, as documented in the 1983 documentary, "First Contact".

    • Goof: At the beginning of the episode they provide as an example, the face of someone about to do violence, a Basque separatist about to enter a bus with 20 pounds of explosives strapped to his chest. Basque separatists do not have and never have had suicide squads. That scenario is unrealistic.

    • Goof: At exactly 31:20 of this episode you can see a hand on screen which most likely belongs to one of the camera crew workers.

    • In this episode we find that the woman Alec was meeting with was, supposedly, not a woman he was having an affair with but, rather, his sponsor in a 12-step drug program (either AA or NA). All such programs strongly discourage members from choosing sponsors of the opposite gender because of the risk of romantic or sexual complications.

    • When talking to the serial rapist to learn the identity of the copy cat, Lightman questions him about his education, specifically "flunking out after one semester at Southern Iowa State". However, while there is an Iowa State University there is no school named Southern Iowa State.

    • As of this episode, Mekhi Phifer is casted as a regular in the opening sequence.

    Allusions (15)

    • Radical Honesty: Eli states that he practices "Radical Honesty"; Radical Honesty is the name of a self improvement program developed by Brad Blanton that challenges people to give up their addiction to lying. The Radical Honesty technique includes having practitioners state their feelings directly and in ways typically considered impolitic (the technique is sometimes confused with the person having functioning autism or Asperger's due to the practitioner's brutal honesty).

    • Eli: Russian spies? Oh what's next? Duran Duran? Parachute pants? Because I love the eighties. Duran Duran are an English Rock/Dance band, formed in Birmingham, UK in 1978. They were one of the most commercially successful New Romantic bands of the 1980's. The band has never disbanded, but the line-up has changed over the years. In 1982 Princess Diana declared Duran Duran her favorite band. Parachute pants were tight, shiny, pants originally created from rip-stop nylon to be used by break dancers. In the early 1990's they were redesigned as extremely baggy pants (largely due to MC Hammer).

    • Eli: Emily? Long time, no see. You look terrible. Awful. Like Gene Simmons when it's really, really humid. Gene Simmons is an American bass player, vocalist, and actor. He is best known as "The Demon," in the hard rock band Kiss.

    • Manny: "Nada es real ni mentira. Nothing is real or lie, it all depends on the color of the glass you're looking through."

This is a reference to Ramón de Campoamor, a spanish poet, who composed many proverbs about love, friendship, truth, and existence.

The original reads: "Y es que en este mundo traidor, no hay verdad ni mentira: todo es según el cristal con que se mira."

This loosely translates to: "In this treacherous world, there is no truth or lie. Everything is seen through the eye of the beholder."

    • Episode Title: Do No Harm The episode title, Do No Harm, refers to a part of the Hippocratic Oath, which all medicine practicioners are tied to in order to exercise their profession.

    • During the interview session at the casino, after Abe's body is found in the trunk, Cal tells Bob: This is not a sideshow Bob, move on. Alluding to Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons another Fox Tv show.

    • Andre: Ease up on the Jedi mind tricks, ok, Obi Wan? The Jedi are characters in the Star Wars Movie. They use a quasi-telekinetic power, known as the Force, and weapons, known as light-sabers. The Force can enhance natural, physical and mental abilities, including strength and accuracy. The Jedi are able to influence and control the minds of others by making use of the Jedi mind trick.

    • Cal: Well, there's a lot of chemistry in Chernobyl. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. It is the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is the only level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
