  • Episode Description
  • When a minister named Reverend Hale passes through Walnut Grove, he earns Reverend Alden's respect by making a generous donation to the Church, and he is quickly accepted by the congregation as a strong and efficient speaker. As Reverend Hale's popularity increases, Reverend Alden fears that he is being pushed away by his own community, and Mr. Edwards suspects trouble after catching Reverend Hale spending some private time with Laura and Sarah. Meanwhile, John and Almanzo head off to San Francisco on a business trip, and the danger and bustle of the big city present an exasperating string of events that these two country men are not prepared for.moreless

  • Quotes (1)

    • Sarah: The tomato crop's just beautiful! John: (in a bad mood) Yeah, I noticed. Sarah: Maybe you just shouldn't go. John: No. LaGrange elected me as the local representative. It's my responsibility. Even with Almanzo sharing expenses, money's just gonna be awfully tight, that's all. Sarah: Well, when hasn't it been? John: I just don't want to wind up sleeping in somebody's doorway--especially in San Francisco!

    Notes (3)

    • This is the first and only episode to feature Almanzo and John Carter in such a prominent role together, with all their San Francisco mishaps. Despite being 13 years apart in age (the actor playing John is older), the two actors have remained good friends, years after the show ended.

    • The Japanese bath that Almanzo and John used was built specifically for this episode, right on a stage. Dean Butler (Alamnzo) mentioned this in an interview with Little House historian Patrick Laboutiere.

    • Featured characters: Reverend Alden, Almanzo Wilder, and John Carter

    Trivia (3)

    • John Carter mentions early in the episode that the family's money is going to be tight, and his wife Sarah says, "When hasn't it been?" This might be a more convincing statement if the Carters' house was less fancy and decorated on the inside, and besides that, they both have jobs in Walnut Grove, so even if they're not rich, they should be doing decently.

    • Look out for a badly hidden tattoo on John Carter's left arm as he and Almanzo go for a bath in the Japanese hotel. There is some kind of greenish stuff covering it, but you can totally see it.

    • Watch closely when John and Almanzo are leaving for San Francisco, and Sarah gives John one last kiss. The kiss does not look authentic in the very least, and when you watch, you'll see what I mean.
