  • Episode Description
  • Spotted Eagle, the young son of a recently killed Sioux Indian, moves to Walnut Grove with his Caucasian mother Amelia. Amelia's father grudgingly agrees to let them stay with him, but Jeremy--who is ashamed that his daughter married a Native American--ostracizes the child and refuses to call him by his preferred name, then forces Amelia to lie about both her marriage and her son. Tension flies as the Ingalls girls become Spotted Eagle's only friends at school, and because kids are often threatened by someone who's different, poor Spotted Eagle endures harsh treatment from his most insensitive classmates--which might be somewhat bearable if he could at least form a relationship with the grandfather he loves.moreless

    • Jeremy: How could you fall in love with one of them? Amelia: Well, White Buffalo was one of the kindest, most loving men I've ever known! Jeremy: He was a savage! Amelia: What about the soldiers that killed him? What about them? You said to put the past behind us. Jeremy: I knew you had married him. I wouldn't have known you were a willing squall! Amelia: What about Spotted Eagle? Jeremy: He's an orphan. You adopted him. Amelia: How many people are gonna believe that? I lived with them for twelve years, Papa! Jeremy: They'll believe it now! And you're not gonna change that. Amelia: He's my flesh and blood, and yours, too! Jeremy: He is not! I have held up my head all the time you've been gone, young lady, and you are not going to shame me now! I want you with me, Amelia. But it's got to be the way I say. Amelia: All right. Say what you want. It won't change the fact that he's my son, and he's your grandson!

    • Laura: (after Spotted Eagle is beat up) Seth and his friends did it. Miss Beadle: (to Seth) Is that true? ANSWER ME! Seth: Yeah! And it'll happen again if he comes back to school! We don't want any Injuns around here!

    Trivia (4)

    • At the end of the episode, Miss Beadle gets so angry at student Seth for beating up Spotted Eagle, she slams her hand down on his desk and screams in his face. This is an extremely rare bout of fury in Miss Beadle, who was usually very mild-tempered and calm, even when such issues arose in the classroom. Michael Landon, who always was known for his wacky sense of humor, used to refer to episodes like this as "Beadle kills the kids again."

    • The facial makeup used to detail Spotted Eagle's run-in with Seth and his friends is so fake, it's funny. It almost looks as if they colored around his eye with a blueish marker to make it look like a black eye.

    • The bear claw that Laura gives Spotted Eagle is the one the Osage Indian Chief gave her in the pilot movie, which serves as a nice continuity link.

    • Joseph originally sits with Laura and Marry. He is sitting behind them the next time.
