  • Quotes (8)

    • Harriet: Percival, how dare you say that I am fat! Percival: I'm sorry, Mother Oleson. Harriet: Ugh, will you please stop calling me that?

    • Mary: When would you go to take the test? Adam: Well, I've only got four weeks to study for it, and I'm not going to be able to do any teaching during that time. I know it's going to be a real burden on you and Hester Sue. Mary: We can manage. Besides, summer break's coming up in three weeks. Adam: And I promised you a trip to Walnut Grove. I'll make it up to you. When I'm a lawyer, I'll have enough money to go anywhere in the world you want to go. Paris or Rome! Oh, Mary, I can do this! I got this feeling, like God came down, gave me my sight back, and said, "Okay, let's see what you can do with it."

    • Adam: I don't even know where to begin. When this first happened, when I regained my sight, it had a great effect on me. The way I feel and think about things. I used to love teaching. I found it challenging and exciting, and and I really thought it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But it just isn't. The more I talk to Mr. Davis, and the more I study those law books, the more I realize I want to be a lawyer. I have to be a lawyer. I talked to Mr. Davis tonight, and he's arranged for me to go to Minneapolis and take the exam. If I get a good enough grade, I have a chance at a scholarship. I know that's a big "if," but I just have to try. Mary, I want this more than I've wanted anything in my whole life. I can do it. I just know I can do it. What do you think? Mary: I don't know what to think. It's such a big surprise. Adam: Well, i know. Just think about it a minute. If I did well, I could make enough money to get the school anything it needs! Books, furniture, and we can even get one of those newfangled air conditioners so the kids won't die of heat in the summers!

    • Hester Sue: (when Adam doesn't show up at the picnic) Mary, you know how men folk are when they start talking. They pretend that women are the ones, but they can beat us any day. Mary: He shouldn't have promised, and it's not just today! All week long, he's put off his homework assignments, and he hasn't graded papers. He just reads those law books Mr. Davis gave him. Hester Sue: He loves that law business, there's no doubt about that. Mary: I'm losing him, Hester Sue. Hester Sue: What on Earth are you talking about? Mary: I'm losing Adam to all his new friends. His sighted friends. Hester Sue: That's not true. He wanted you to go with him. Mary: Not really. When he's with his sighted friends, I don't even exist! I'm afraid, Hester Sue. I'm afraid of losing my husband to a world I can't see!

    • Harriet: For your information, young man, I am not fat. I'm large boned! Percival: Oh, really? Well, that would be rather difficult to determine, since your bones are buried so deep below the surface!

    Notes (5)

    • Matthew Laborteaux (Albert) was absent from this episode (he has been in them up until now almost every episode since he came back to Walnut Grove with the Ingalls).

    • Mary starts wearing her hair up in this episode for the first time.

    • Laura is absent from this episode, although she does provide a voice-over in a scene.

    • Larry Germain was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling for this 2-part episode.

    • As this story centres around Adam, Linwood Boomer was credited as a guest.

    Trivia (4)

    • Harriet and Nels say they own their town's telephone system. However, this was not possible in the 1880's. Small towns did not have switch boards or telephone systems until after 1893, when Alexander Graham Bell's patents expired.

    • When Harriet is in the pantry at the restaurant, she picks a doughnut up from a serving platter and puts her tongue on it before deciding against eating it. But instead of throwing it away, she puts it back on the plate of doughnuts in the pantry, where it will inevitably be served to a customer. This is obviously disgusting and unsanitary, and being a professional businesswoman, she should have known much better than that.

    • In this episode, after Adam regains his sight, he is oblivious to Mary's feelings for a long time. You would think he'd have more sensitivity because when the tables were turned in Season 5's Enchanted Cottage, and Mary was the one who had a chance at getting her eyesight back, Adam had feelings of inadequacy about it.

    • Nitpick: Note the opening sequence and the 'Explosive' wagon coming in. Blasting Oil from McCray & Co. Hmmm, any relation to the Producer of the show Kent McCray, coincidence, or a historical fact?
