  • Episode Description
  • Gordo encourages Lizzie to finally do something about her crush on Ethan Craft; that is, ask him to the Sadie Hawkins Day dance. But when Lizzie does this she's disappointed when Ethan tells her that he likes their relationship as friends and doesn't want to risk changing it by going out with her. Lizzie is determined to turn herself into a girl who is perfect for Ethan and with the help of Gordo, she begins a surveillance campaign to determine all of Ethan's likes and dislikes so she can make herself over for him. Meanwhile, Matt and Lanny are trying to whip up an "evil potion," but instead they come up with a great-tasting smoothie. It's so good that when they begin to sell it to neighboring kids, Matt's back yard becomes the newest hot spot in town, and soon everyone is flocking to the "Club Flamingo." Lizzie goes on her campaign for Ethan and it seems to be working: he's knocked out that all of a sudden they seem to have so much in common. She even knows how to dress like his fantasy woman! So since they're getting along so well, Lizzie once again asks Ethan to the dance. He tells her that nothing has changed: he still likes being friends with her and doesn't want to be boyfriend/girlfriend. Lizzie is dismayed and confused by what has happened. Her parents try to console her, but she's still down. She goes to Matt's Club Flamingo to drown her sorrows in smoothies. Matt has had his own troubles--a big scary kid named Sonny doesn't like the competition Matt's place has been giving him, so he has pressured Matt into shutting down. Gordo and Miranda drop by. They're dateless for the dance too. So while Lanny "plays it again," Gordo and Lizzie have a slow dance (and so do Miranda and Matt.)moreless

  • Sadie Hawkins Day dance. A girl has to ask a boy to go to this dance. Lizzie is going to ask Ethan Craft obviously. When she asks him Ethan said she was more of a friend than a girlfriend. Lizzie and Gordo watch Ethan Craft to see his hobbies.

  • Quotes (15)

    • Lizzie: OK, so, ah...Tudgeman finally cracked. Miranda: It's his diet. He lives on fish sticks and cream soda. Gordo: He hasn't cracked. He's just excited about the Sadie Hawkins Day dance. Since the girls ask the guys, this is his big chance. Lizzie: OK, but does he actually think that Kate is gonna ask him? Gordo: OK, he's cracked.

    • Jo: Since when did you become an expert on teenaged girls? Sam: I was dumped by enough of them.

    • Jo: Matt, what are you doing? Matt: Making a potion that will usher in thousands of years of EVIL! Jo: OK, well, don't break anything.

    • Matt: Tudge! How's life been treatin' ya? Larry: Like a baby treats a diaper.

    • Gordo: And as expected poor old Gordo got no invites [to the Sadie Hawkins Dance]! The big goose egg, good morning, good afternoon and goodnight! Lizzie: So, uhh, dance with me.

    Notes (9)

    • This episode can be found in the paperback novelization book Lizzie Loves Ethan and the Lizzie McGuire Cine-Manga Volume 7. It is also on Vol. 4 of the Lizzie McGuire DVD Collection entitled "Totally Crushed" released on Mar. 16, 2004.

    • The makers of Lizzie seem to like classic gangster films. There have been several references to The Godfather (1972) (see above) over the course of the series, and this episode seems to contain a little tribute to Martin Scorsese's 1990 film Goodfellas, which starred Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. In that movie, there's a long tracking shot with the camera moving through a nightclub, similar to the shot in which the camera follows Matt walking through his "Club Flamingo."

    • Further character identification: "Drinking Kid" (Jacob Price) in the credits is identified as Patterson in the show. Sonny's last name is given as Mazerowski. Unseen characters: Mr. Boudreaux, the school janitor that Matt does an imitation of; Denise Palmer, a girl Gordo mentions that Ethan liked. And of course Kate Sanders is mentioned also. Characters with no lines: One of Matt's customers, a girl he refers to as "Sunshine."

    • When Larry is having his conversation with "Kate" (really the mirror!), the music playing is from Peter Tchaikovsky's famous 1870 composition the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. In the 20th century it was given lyrics and turned into a popular song entitled "Our Love."

    • Music includes the song "All I Can Do" by Jump5 from the album All the Time in the World (2002), played during the montage when Lizzie, Gordo and Miranda have Ethan under surveillance. Although, for some reason this song is replaced on the DVD with "Stupid Cupid" from The Princess Diaries Soundtrack (2001). It is an updated version sung by Mandy Moore, it was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield and first recorded by Connie Francis in 1958.

    Trivia (6)

    • When "All I Can Do" is played, the lyric "If you look at my heart" is closed-captioned as "If you're looking for fun."

    • Ethan runs into a pole when the birds are chasing him and Lizzie states that he's nearsighted. But the inability to see objects up close means a person is farsighted.

    • Somehow Lizzie, looking in the mirror of her compact from several feet away, manages to get a close-up reflection of Ethan, close enough to read the label on his soda can.

    • In the opening scene, one shot shows Miranda with folded arms, but the next quick shot shows her tucking her hair back. This goes on for about ten shot changes. She always has her arms folded in one shot and then up in the next, without time to change positions.

    • Lizzie drinks Matt's smoothie, which contains strawberries, even though in an earlier episode it was said that she was allergic to strawberry ice cream.

    • Ethan: Like Britney Spears!
Britney Spears is the former Mouseketeer who became the biggest-selling female teenage singer ever in the late 1990's and 2000's. Ethan's a little off the mark if he thinks she's a "European...sophisticated" type. Britney was born in Louisiana and projected an All-American image, though she has been widely criticized for creating too sexy an image that is negatively affecting the way her younger fans dress and groom themselves in order to imitate her.

    • Gordo: He's just excited by the Sadie Hawkins Day dance.
Sadie Hawkins Day originated in a satirical comic strip written by Al Capp called Lil' Abner, which ran from 1934 until 1977. It was about a bunch of hillbillies who lived in the fictional town of Dogpatch somewhere in the mountains. Sadie Hawkins was the mayor's daughter. She was so ugly that in order to marry her off, the mayor declared "Sadie Hawkins Day," when there was a big race with all the unmarried men getting a head start. If any woman pursuing the men caught one, she could marry him. Since then Sadie Hawkins dances, where the girls ask to boys to go, have been held at schools everywhere

    • Tudgeman: I'm gonna be late for my 4-H Club meeting.
The 4-H Club is a program of the Cooperative Extension Department of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This organization is for young people interested in careers in agricuture or agriculture in general. Because of the decline in the number of farmers in the U.S. and the fact that not many kids in urban areas care much about farming or agriculture, the 4-H Club is sometimes looked on as a nerdy, square organization. The four "H"'s in the club's name stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health

    • Lizzie: I listen to Ja Rule when I practice.
Ja Rule is a rap artist who has been very successful around the time this episode was first broadcast, especially on several duets with female partners.

    • Matt: "Table 3 wants to hear some P. Diddy."
Rap artist and record executive Sean "Puffy" Combs, who was known as Puff Daddy on his recordings, changed his professional name to P. Diddy in 2001.
