  • Quotes (11)

    • (Jack finds Kate laying in his bed) Jack: Kate? What are you doing here? Kate: (toneless) Are you still going back to the island? Jack: Yeah. Yeah, I think I am. Kate: Then I'm going with you. Jack: Kate, what happened? Where's Aaron? Why...

    • Jack: Where are you going? Ben: Oh, I made a promise to an old friend of mine. Just a loose end that needs tieing up.

    • Jack And the other people on this plane-what's gonna happen to them? Ben: Who cares?

    • Kate: Why hold on to something that makes you feel sad?

    • Ben: Thomas the Apostle. When Jesus wanted to return to Judea, knowing that he would probably be murdered there, Thomas said to the others, "Let us also go, that we might die with him." But Thomas was not remembered for this bravery. His claim to fame came later... when he refused to acknowledge the resurrection. He just couldn't wrap his mind around it. The story goes... that he needed to touch Jesus' wounds to be convinced. Jack: So was he? Ben: Of course he was. We're all convinced sooner or later, Jack.

    Trivia (21)

    • Jack told Kate that he gave his father white tennis shoes before going to Los Angeles. These are the same shoes which hung from a tree in the opening scene of the pilot.

    • During the magic show Ray was watching, the magician made a white rabbit (an animal that has often related to DHARMA) with a black eye appear. Another reference to the black and white theme.

    • Desmond said Mrs. Hawking cost him 4 years of his life. 4 is one of "The Numbers". However, according to previous episodes, he spent 3 years on the island (he was probably refering to the previous year also).

    • In the plane, Hurley was reading the comic book "Y: The Last Man", translated to Spanish. It was just like in the first flight, where he was reading a Spanish version of "Green Lantern/Flash: Faster Friends Part I".

    • In the scene where Jack and Kate are having breakfast, Jack asks Kate if she still prefers milk and sugar for her coffee and she says yes. Jack then goes into the kitchen for the milk. However, while he is still in the kitchen, a bottle of milk is already on the dining table in front of Kate.

    Allusions (8)

    • Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi: Ben says something to the affect that he has a promise to keep to an old friend. That is what Luke Skywalker said to the crew of the Millennium Falcon when they asked why he wasn't going to be joining the rest of the Rebel Fleet at the Solust Star system. Skywalker instead went to the Dagobah system to meet Yoda one last time.

    • Fraidy Cat: The magician mentions his fraidy-cat rabbit. Fraidy Cat is a 1975 comical children's cartoon show about an unlucky and miserable cat who has used up eight of his lives, and is now on his ninth and last life.

    • The Incredulity of Saint Thomas: Ben looks at this painting by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610). This story of the bible is about Thomas doubting Jesus' Resurrection. "Doubting Thomas" is a phrase used to describe someone who is very sceptical about something.

    • Ulysses: Ben is seen reading Ulysses by James Joyce on Flight 316 before he leaves his seat. The novel is a story about the journey through Dublin on a single day (June 16, 1904) by its main character, Leopold Bloom. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse told viewers to read this (very tough to read) book on one of the Dharma Special Access videos.

    • The Chronicles of Narnia: The DHARMA Initiative station, the Lamp Post is a reference to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, the second book in the Narina series. In the book, a lamp post marks the passage between Narnia and the real world. In the episode, the Lamp Post serves a similar function with regard to the Island. In addition, the opening scene of the episode is a reference to the first chapter of Prince Caspian, the fourth book in the Narnia series. In the chapter, entitled The Island, the children in the book return to Narnia via a mysterious island with ancient ruins. The first thing they do is play in the water.
