The Incident (2)

Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions

Quotes (8)

  • Ben: So now after all this time you’ve decided to stop ignoring me. Thirty-five years I lived on this island, and all I ever heard was your name, over and over. Richard would bring me your instructions. All those slips of paper, all those lists. And I never questioned anything. I did as I was told. But when I dared to ask to see you myself I was told you have to wait, you have to be patient. But when he asks to see you? He gets marched straight up here as if he was Moses. So why him? What was it that was so wrong with me? What about me?

  • Sun: (looking at Locke's body) I don't understand. If this is Locke, who's in there?

  • Hurley: (to Sayid) Don't worry, dude. Everything will be fine when Jack changes the future. Or the past. One of those.

  • Jacob: (Weakly)...Coming Locke: What? I can't hear you. Jacob: They're... coming.

  • Ilana: What lies in the shadow of the Statue? Richard: Ille qui nos omnes servabit. (He who will protect us all/He who will save us all).

  • Sawyer: Why you doing this, Juliet? (Juliet's voice breaks.) Juliet: I... If I never meet you, then I never have to lose you.

  • Jacob: Well, what if you weren't cursed? What if you were blessed? Hugo: How do you mean "blessed?" Jacob: Well, you get to talk to people you've lost...Seems like a pretty wonderful thing to me.

  • Juliet: Live together, die alone.

Trivia (15)

  • Numbers: -During the surgery, Jack stars counts to 5, but stops at 4. -Radzinsky spent 8 years working on the design of the Swan Station. -"AA 823" is shown on the bottom left corner of the crate Ilana's group was carrying. -It took Juliet 8 hits to set off the bomb.

  • Juliet detonates the bomb with a "black rock."

  • Goof: During the end gun fight after everyone puts down their guns there is a shot of Kate getting out of the DHARMA van with Miles in the foreground. You can see that Miles is still firing his rifle, however no post production effects (rifle flare and gunshot SFX) are present. This shot was obviously originally intended to be used as part of the battle but instead was used after it had ended.

  • For the second season finale in a row, Ben stabs someone to death. The first was Keamy in "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3".

  • In Jack's flashback, we saw him cut a girl's sac and his father orders him to count to five to stop his fear. This is the story Jack told Kate back in the "Pilot."

  • Patsy Cline's music is heard in the convenience store. The music of Patsy Cline appears in every single one of Kate's flashbacks

  • Black and white: -Locke's face is half shadowed in various parts of the episode. -When Jacob is talking to Ben, half his face is shadowed. -The show's title, typically white lettering on black, is inverted at the end of the episode.

  • The camera movement that reveals Locke's body in the crate is similar to the camera movement used to reveal Locke's body in the coffin at the end of season 4.

Allusions (4)

  • Before Locke fell from the building, Jacob was reading "Everything That Rises Must Converge" by Flannery O'Connor.

  • The Black Swan theory: This theory, formulated by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, refers to a large-impact event that could, by it's sheer unlikeliness, change the course of history and may come as a surprise, even though in hindsight, it all appears to be plausible and foreseeable. The unlikely events during the Swan station incident, the name of the site being the Swan, and the surprising (in an empirical sense) change of the title card from black to white echo these assumptions.

  • Psycho: When Ben stabs Jacob, both his arm motion and the music mirror the famous shower scene in this Hitchcock film.

  • The Dukes of Hazzard: Sawyer refers to Miles as Enos, the deputy on this show.
