A clever episode that channels Batman with creative traps and escapes.
Scriptwriter Brad Radnitz could always be counted on for a clever script even though his tenure with the series paralleled its creative nadir. This episode was not without flaws, ranging from the overly lighthearted tone to the cartoonish villains, but given the context (a special effects artist trying to force a heart attack upon an old man through the use of FX), the episode generally did its job. From the charming old movie footage in the episode's early scenes that foreshadowed the climactic scene to the surprise sabotage of the tires on MacGyver's jeep, it was clear this was gonna be a fun old-school episode featuring hokey MacGyverisms aplenty. On that front, the episode did disappoint a little. MacGyver ended up escaping the pool (filled up with some of the cleanest river water I've ever seen) by using his boot AGAIN...and it seems like they could have come up with a better escape from the catwalk than the strange knife-through-wallet-through paper wall bit. I guess it was the excitement of the "death traps" themselves that I found most entertaining about this episode....along with the tumbling wall from the studio set at the episode's end. The epilogue was very strange and underscored some of the more grating elements of this episode, but overall, it was still one of the best efforts from season seven.moreless
