    • Bear: (after shooting the river's rapids) Just got pulled under up there. Normally you just pop straight up, but I was running out of puff then!

    • Bear: It's the end of my second day, and so far it's been a roller coaster. Finding the river has been a real blessing. The bad news- rivers are the grizzlies' favorite hunting ground.

    • Bear: There's an old rule but a good one when you're lost in the wild: Find a stream or a river, then hunt for a track, because that will lead you to a road and safety.

    • Bear: One of the things I'm finding hard at the moment is missing company.

    • Bear: You can see the white of the fish eye popped out and that is how you know they are cooked.

    • Bear: Surviving in the wild is all about finding the most amount of food using the least amount of energy.

    • Bear: They say there is only two seasons in the Rockies, June and Winter.

    • Bear: (after brushing his teeth with a plant) My dentist would be proud of me.

    Notes (134)

    • Due to criticism that Bear and the show's producers "faked" certain sequences in this episode by manufacturing situations for Bear to demonstrate survival techniques, this episode was never re-released on DVD. It also helped lead to the standard disclaimer at the beginning of future episodes which states that some of what is shown was created, rather than being natural occurrences.

    Allusions (4)

    • Bear talks about keeping the "mozzies" and "midges" away. These are both British slang for mosquitoes.

    • Bear: (giving himself an enema with non potable water to stay hydrated) I guess once this is in... ugh! I guess all you do is lie back... and think of England! The origin of this phrase is unclear, but some say Queen Victoria gave this advice to her daughter for her wedding night. Others say it originated with Lady Alice Hillingdon in 1912, also in reference to her "wifely duty" in her husband's bed.

    • Bear: (playing "bat tennis") You cannot be serious! Bear is making an allusion to one of the best known tennis players in the world, the fiery John McEnroe, who was famous almost as much for his on court tirades against the Umpires of his matches as he was for the seven singles Grand Slam titles, nine Grand Slam doubles titles, and one Grand Slam mixed doubles title from 1977-1989.

    • Jake: (as they dig a snow cave for shelter) I just found Will Ferrell frozen in there.

Jake is referring to the first Man vs Wild celebrity special in season three in which comic actor Will Ferrell joined Bear in the frozen back country of Sweden.

  • For someone saying it's hard to "get lost" in the wilderness, you're right, but WHEN and IF you DO get lost, you'll be happy for any "Survival" shows you may have seen.
