  • Masters of Sex is a Showtime series set in 1956 which features Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters (a well-known fertility specialist) and Virginia Johnson (a former nightclub singer). The series chronicles their unusual lives, romance and pop culture trajectory, which saw them go from a Midwestern teaching hospital to the cover of Time magazine and Johnny Carson's couch. Also staring Caitlin Fitzgerald, Nicholas D'Agosto and Teddy Sears, the series is an adaptation of Thomas Maier's book, "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How to Love".moreless

    • Jane: (to Virginia) Dr. William Masters, he's the alpha dog of coochie medicine.

    • Virginia Johnson: I think women often confuse love with physical attraction.

    • Virginia Johnson: It's interesting. When you look at the data you get a very clear picture of what's happening to the subject physically. But if you want to answer a question like "How does an orgasm feel for a woman?" it's not so easy to see it in the numbers.
William Masters: How does it feel?
Virginia Johnson: It's like trying to describe salt to someone who has never tasted salt.
      William Masters: I've tasted salt.
Virginia Johnson: Not the way I've tasted salt.
      William Masters: Go ahead.
Virginia Johnson: How does an orgasm feel for a woman? Fantastic.

    • Virginia Johnson: (to Masters about why a woman would fake an orgasm) So the woman can get back to whatever it is she would rather be doing.

    • William Masters: (after telling Virginia what the study really is about) I am a man of Science.

    • William Masters: The study of sex is the beginning of all life. Yet we sit like prudish cavemen in the dark riddled with shame and guilt.

    • William Masters: I simply want to answer the question what happens to the body during sex.

    • Libby Masters: (after having sex) What do you see when you look at me?
William Masters: What do I see?
      Libby Masters: Yes.
      William Masters: I see... love.
