Quotes (153)

  • (McMillan has been woken up by a telephone call from an officer) Officer: Sorry to bother you, Commissioner, but we saw your limo drive by and it didn't look like you were in it. McMillan: There's a good chance I'm not.

  • Chief Yaekel: You know, if I were married to Mrs. McMillan... McMillan: She'd be Mrs. Yaekel.

  • Sgt. Enright: The odd thing about this case is that it's not your typical whodunit. It's more of a who'd-they-do-it-to. If we could find out who they did it to, then we'd know whodunit.

  • McMillan: I don't want to wear a costume. I hate the idea! Sally: Well you could at least wear something simple, like a pirate costume. McMillan: I'll wear a business suit. That's a now pirate costume.

  • (Sgt. Enright and McMillan are stuck in traffic) Enright: Commissioner, what do you think would happen if I turned on the siren? McMillan: We'd get a headache.

  • Sally: You mean you believe me? Mac: Of course I believe you. Sally: How could you believe me? Mac: If the situation were reversed, wouldn't you believe me? If a strange woman wrote a composition and named it after me and sent me flowers and invited us out to dinner, and I said I didn't know her and never had met her, well (chuckles), what would you think? Sally: You know exactly what I'd think.

  • Sally: Usually when you figure it out I can figure out how you figured it out, only this time I can't figure it out.

  • Mac: (responding to Sally's description) A tall thin short fat bald man with curly hair.

Trivia (10)

  • This is the pilot episode for the series. The McMillan house and interiors were actually Rock Hudson's own house at 9402 Beverly Crest Drive, Beverly Hills. So all the furnishings, carpets, paintings, etc. you see are his.

  • While tailing Rachel, Mac's car is nearly forced over a cliff by a Mustang, in a proficient night exterior marred at the climax by a rapid tracking pan that produces the same "strobe" effect found in Losey's The Sleeping Tiger, for example. In each case, it may be assumed that the production budget or the shooting schedule (or both) prevented re-shooting.

  • From 1984 to 1985, Rock Hudson landed a recurring role on the hit ABC prime time soap opera "Dynasty" as Daniel Reece, a love-interest for Krystle Carrington played by Linda Evans.

  • Sgt. Enright's first speech to the Academy was titled The Importance of Proper Reporting Procedures in Felony Investigations.

  • Sally's protest sign read, "NO BREAD FOR BREAD".

  • Sgt. Enright's second speech to the Academy was titled "The Care and Maintenance of Police Property."

  • Shaw steps into the "electric eye" while exiting the secure file room.

  • The exploding yacht scene (see below), owing to the constraints of the shooting schedule, is made up of shots filmed at various hours of the day, from mid- or late afternoon to dusk, without sequence.

  • Mildred: Murder on a Train. We'll get Hitch to direct it. Mildred alludes to director Alfred Hitchcock's 1951 film Stranger on a Train.

  • (Mac has acquired a taste for Mildred's favorite soap opera, Search for a Smile) Mac: These shows really clip your wings. You have to stay home every day to find out what's going on. This allusion is to the soap Search For Tomorrow.
