    • In the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California, officials were unsure if a skier had missed a gate in the men's slalom. They asked a broadcaster if they could review the videotape and the "instant replay" was born.

    • The sport of "bobsled" got its name from the way early teams would bob their heads to gain more speed on straight portions of a run.

    • In 1985 Swedish ski jumper Jan Bokloev spread the tips of his skies into a "V" formation and found it improved his aerodynamics. While initially ridiculed, the technique proved successful and by 1992, all Olympic medalists had adopted it.
