    • Twilight: (After Rarity steps away) Quick, before she decides to dye my coat a new color.

    • Rarity: (Putting Twilight through a costume test montage) No. No. Unh-unh. Too green. Too Yellow. Too poofy. Not poofy enough. Too frilly. Too shiny. (Gasps) Now go on my dear. You were telling me where you’re from.

    • Spike: (After sending the scroll) There. It’s on its way. (Sing-song) But I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Twilight: Oh, I’m not worried, Spike. The princess trusts me completely. In all the years she’s been my mentor, she’s never once doubted me.
      Spike: (Belches-up a scroll.)
Twilight: See? I knew she would want to take immediate action.
Spike: (Unrolls scroll, then clears throat) My dearest, most faithful student, Twilight, you know that I value your diligence and that I trust you completely.
      Twilight: Mm-hmm.
Spike: But you simply must stop reading those dusty old books.
      Twilight: (Gasps)

    • Rainbow Dash: Hey! I can clear this sky in ten seconds flat.
      Twilight Sparkle: (grins) Prove it.
Rainbow Dash: (clears the clouds in the area at lightning speed then returns to Twilight) What'd I say? Ten. Seconds. Flat.

    • Twilight Sparkle: All the ponies in this town are CRAZY!

    • (After Princess Celestia does not show up for the opening of the Summer Sun Celebration.)
The Mayor: Remain calm, everypony. There must be a reasonable explanation.
Pinkie Pie: Oo, oo! I love guessing games! Is she hiding?
      Rarity: She's gone!
(All of the ponies present gasp.)
      Pinkie Pie: Oooh, she's good!

    • Rarity: Oh my stars, darling! Whatever happened to your coiffeur?
Twilight Sparkle: Oh, you mean my mane? Well, it's a long story. I'm just here to check on the decorations, and then I'll be out of your hair.
Rarity: Out of my hair? What about your hair?  (Herds Twilight stage left.)
Twilight: Wait.  Where are we going?  Help!
Spike: (Follows floating in the air, using his tail as a propeller, with a lovey-dovey look on his face.)

    • Twilight Sparkle: But, you told me it was all an old pony tail.
Princess Celestia: (smiling knowingly) I told you that you needed to make some friends, nothing more.

    Allusions (248)

    • The description of Princess Celestia and Luna being responsible for bringing day and night is similar to Skinfaxi and Hrímfaxi, the horses of Dagr (day) andNótt (night), from Norse mythology.

    • The alternative title of this episode as given in Hasbro's viewing guide, "Mare in the Moon", is a reference to the "Man in the Moon", an imaginary figure of a man or human face made up of the dark areas visible on the Moon when full.

    • Sleeping Beauty (1959)

      Nightmare Moon:
Stand back, you foals! (summons lightning before disappearing)

Nightmare Moon summons the lightning and disappears after telling the 'foals' to stand back before they can seize her is done in a similar fashion to when Maleficent lays a curse on the Princess Aurora and disappears before the guards can lay a hand on her.

    • The scene where Fluttershy removes the thorn from the manticore's paw is reminiscent of the story of Androcles and the Lion where a slave removes a thorn from a lion's paw and is rewarded for his compassion over time.

    • Benny Hill

The chase scene towards the end of the episode where everypony is chasing Twilight Sparkle around town and she tries to hide by disguising herself is like the chase scenes at the end of episodes of The Benny Hill Show. Even the music is almost identical the famous "Benny Hill chase music".

    • Fluttershy's description of the private gated garden surrounding the dance at the Grand Galloping Gala involved "loons and toucans and bitterns, oh my!" This line shows a great deal of resemblance to the line "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" from the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz.

    • Rose: The horror, the horror...

This is a reference to a line in the novel Hearts of Darkness, which was later adapted into the film Apocalypse Now.

    • Pepe Le Pew: The chase scene between Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash parodies this famous cartoon.
