A good night of basketball
A snowy Friday night, not much to do, but you can always count on ESPN to deliver some great basketball for you, and they did tonight. I am glad they flexed out the originally scheduled Los Angeles Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns game for the second half of the doubleheader with the Orlando Magic vs. New Orleans Hornets, which saw an incredible performance by David West in a thriller to cap off the night.
The opening game with the Mavericks vs. Hawks was eve better, and featured a hilarious moment as Mr. Overrated Jason Kidd got into a fight with Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson. Youtube it!moreless
After a first half of huge runs for both teams, Dallas comes back again and steals a game from Atlanta behind a triple-double from Jason Kidd. The Hornets come back from a horrible second quarter to beat the Magic.
The Atlanta Hawks had a decent start over the Mavericks, before Dallas went on a huge 20-1 run that stretched from the first to second quarters. This was just before Atlanta woke up, and outscored Dallas 22-5, en route to a halftime tie, 50 apiece. Atlanta started to "pull away" in the third quarter and early in the fourth. Atlanta led by as many as fifteen points, and led by 90-77 late in the fourth, when the Mavericks stepped up. They outscored Atlanta 22-9 in the remainder of regulation. One point was off a Dirk Nowitzki free throw that was shot because of a technical foul assessed on Hawks' head coach, Mike Woodson. This was because Jason Kidd, while dribbling up the court, noticed Woodson out on the court. He sprinted over there, running into the coach, while in bounds. The officials called a technical foul and Jason Kidd was praised by many after the game for his cleverness. Dallas and Atlanta headed to overtime, tied, 99-99. The Mavericks went on a tear in the overtime session, outscoring the Hawks, 12-4, on their way to a 111-103 comeback victory on the road to extend their win streak to six. In the late game, New Orleans, at home, got outscored 35-20 in the second quarter, trailing at halftime by ten. After trailing by as many as eighteen points, the Hornets rallied to a 100-93 victory over the Orlando Magic. (outscored ORL 28-13 in the fourth period, 54-37 in the second half) David West scored a game-high 40 points. Marcus Thornton and Darren Collison added 18 and 16, respectively. Dwight Howard had another double-double (26 pts, 10 reb) in the loss.moreless
