  • From Donald P. Bellisario comes NCIS, a show bringing us the inner workings of the government agency that investigates all crimes involving Navy and Marine Corps personnel, regardless of rank or position. From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents traverse the globe to investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties. Leading this team that operates outside of the military chain of command is Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a skilled investigator and interrogator who is smart, tough and willing to bend the rules to get the job done. Working under Gibbs is Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a former homicide detective who has instincts that can come only from working on the streets. Joining them is Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), a gifted forensics specialist whose dark wit matches her goth-style hair and clothes, and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum), a medical examiner. Through season one a new character has been introduced -- special agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray, "The Random Years") whose computer skills will be a very big part of the NCIS team. Special Agent Caitlin "Kate" Todd (Sasha Alexander, "Dawson's Creek"), a former United States Secret Service agent, has brought her intelligence and gutsy personality to the team through first 2 seasons, until during her duty in season two finale, when she was murdered by a terrorist. In season three, the NCIS team welcomed Mossad Agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), who took Kate's place in the team, and the NCIS team got a new director, Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly). After Holly's departure at the end of Season 5, the position of the NCIS director was taken over by Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll).moreless

    • Ducky: On her left buttock, I found a tattoo of a stalking leopard. Majestic, brilliant. I've only seen one other like it on a tango dancer in Buenos Aires who died from dehydration. I was on sabbatical...
Prosecutor: Doctor, I was asking about Lieutenant Singer.
Ducky: She wasn't in Buenos Aires.

    • Tony: How fast can you run them?
Abby: Usually takes about 12 hours. But for a dinner...
Tony: Get me a ID in two and I’ll make it Café Atlántico.
      Abby: Sweet...

    • Admiral: What the hell were going on between you and Lieutenant Singer?
      Rabb: Nothing, sir.
Admiral: Nothing my ass! After that performance in the conference room, you’d be my prime suspect.
Rabb: I didn’t kill Lieutenant Singer, Admiral.
Admiral: I know you didn’t kill her. But you’re involved and I wanna know how.
Rabb: I’d rather not say, sir.
Admiral: Good God, did you get her pregnant?!

    • Tony: I remember we found this old guy, died watching TV. We found him sitting stiff as a board with a Bud in his hand.
Viv: No, please, not another Baltimore-homicide story.
Tony: It looks like a natural death, but we gotta wait for the M.E. to confirm, right? So it’s dinnertime, my partner and I are starving. So we tell the rookie to keep an eye on the stiff. Rookie’s never been alone with a body. Well, suddenly, the body goes out of rigour, slumps, the air in the lungs is forced through the voice box, and the corpse moans.
      Viv: Stop it!
Tony: Rookie freaks, empties his revolver into the body.
Gibbs: You know what I think, DiNozzo?
Tony: Don’t say it’s an urban myth, man, because I was there.
Gibbs: I think you were the rookie.
Tony: That’s funny, Gibbs. Funny. Wrong but funny.

    • Rabb: Look, there are enough holes in this case to raise reasonable doubt. Counselor: There is also enough evidence to tie you to the murder and a string of witnesses, your colleagues, who will testify to angry words between you and Lt. Singer right up to the time of her death. Rabb: Well, it could be worse I guess. Counselor: How? Rabb: I could not have an alibi Counselor: You have an alibi?? Rabb: No.

    • Harm Rabb: How long you been doing this, Gibbs? Gibbs: Nineteen years. Rabb: Can you tell if someone's guilty, by looking in their eyes? Gibbs: I can. Harm Rabb: Yeah, well look in mine. Ask me. Ask me! Gibbs: Would you kill for your brother?

    • Gibbs: I'm not smart enough to play risky games with a lawyer of your caliber, Rabb. Harm Rabb: That's Commander Rabb. Or Commander. Or sir, "Gunny." I believe as a reservist you're still technically in the Marine Corps. Gibbs: I am an NCIS Special Agent, and I don't have to salute you, or sir you, or give you any military courtesy, but you know that. So who's playing the games here?

    • Major McBurney: Nice lab you got here. Interesting Martha Stewart on LSD touches around the place too.

    • Patrick (Bud Roberts Jr.) and Mark (Gibbs) stared together in the 1987 movie Summer School. Mark plays a gym teacher that has to teach remedial English to failing students over the summer holidays.

    • When Tony gives Abby the blood, i.e. the first time we see Abby, the song playing is "Transfer" by Collide, and when the lawyer dude is in the lab talking to Abby, the song playing is "Frozen" by Collide, and the song playing when both the JAG lawyers come to the lab with Gibbs to get the results from the tag in the hat is "Monochrome" by Collide.

    • Sasha Alexander is the only one of the original NCIS cast members that does not appear in this episode.

    • This episode is actually not a NCIS episode. It has the title JAG, but it's considered a one-hour pilot episode for NCIS.

    • Guest star Lawrence Pressman also appears in the season 4 episode Driven, but in a different role.

    • This episode was nominated for a VES Award for Outstanding Matte Painting in a Televised Program, Music Video or Commercial.

    • The street where Kate and Major Kerry part ways, as well as where Tony investigates Major Kerry's death was filmed on Town Center Drive in Valencia, CA. The main entrance to the Valencia Town Center Mall can be seen behind Tony.

    Trivia (1103)

    • GOOF: On Abby's first scene, when she grabs her lab coat, her hands are glove less, on the next pan, as she adjusts the coat, you can see a blue glove on her right hand, the next shot has her without gloves, again, as she reaches for one in the glove box.

    • GOOF: When Gibbs is interrogating Rabb, there is a camera shot through the viewing glass that shows Tony, Viv and Abby in the mirror reflection off the glass. However, Abby hasn't entered the room yet as evident by her entering the room about 10 seconds later.

    • TRIVIA: About Tony's identity when he goes undercover: in real life, Michael Weatherly has a son named August, nicknamed "Gus."

    • TRIVIA: The pilot for this series aired as a two-part episode of JAG in the spring of 2003. Two major changes were made for the series. A gimmick in which Ducky is shown talking to corpses - from the corpse's point of view - was dropped, and a character named Viv Blackadder (played by Robyn Lively) was replaced by the character played by Sasha Alexander.

    • TRIVIA: The final shot of the title sequence in this and every episode (a car driving toward the Washington Capitol Building) is taken from the pilot episode for NCIS, JAG's "Ice Queen".

    • GOOF: When the medical team is working on Cmdr. Trapp, they say that he's not breathing, and has no pulse, but the spittle over his lips noticeably bubbles from the actor's breathing during the close-up.

    • TRIVIA: Gibbs keeps referring to the movie Air Force One, which starred Harrison Ford and Glenn Close. In the movie, the secret service agent who betrayed the President had the last name "Gibbs".

    • TRIVIA: When the terrorist plot is finally confirmed and Kate hears about the medical emergency, Gibbs tells her to stay with the president. Yet, when the shooting starts, she comes out to the plane corridor, gun drawn. She had no way of knowing at that point that the battle was over, so in effect had just left the president unattended and unprotected.

    • President Bush: Have we met, Commander? Commander Trapp: Yes sir, on the Abraham Lincoln, Mr. President. President Bush: Ahh the Lincoln, you know the trip to the Lincoln was the best day I've had on this job. This is an allusion to May 1st 2003, when President Bush landed on the Abraham Lincoln (Nimitz class aircraft carrier) to announce that major combat operation in Iraq had ended. It is also when the infamous "Mission Accomplished" banner was seen over the President during his speech.

    • Gibbs keeps saying that the aircraft is just like the one in the Harrison Ford movie. The set was in fact the same one as used in Air Force One.

    • Dennis: NCIS anything like CSI? CSI is an acronym that stands for Crime Scene Investigation. It was made widely popular due to CBS's tv-shows CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its spin-offs, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.

    • Gibbs also states that Tom Clancy wrote about terrorists hijacking airplanes and flying them into buildings. This could refer to either "Debt of Honor" from 1994, or "Executive Order" from 1996), both of which had that subplot.

    • Gibbs: Never apologize. It's sign of weakness. This line is actually from the John Wayne film: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

    • The Football
The concept of the football came about in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis. After the crisis, President Kennedy ordered a review of the U.S. Nuclear Command and Control system. The result was the highly fied National Security Action Memorandum that created "the football". It follows the President wherever he goes and is never more that a few steps from his side. It is carried by a military officer with the "Yankee White" clearance. It contains a secure SATCOM radio and handset, the nuclear launch codes known as the "Gold Codes" and the President's Decision Book - the nuclear playbook that the President would rely on if he would ever have to decide to use nuclear weapons. Its real name is unknown but it is popularly known as "the football".

    • Kate: He just received his Yankee White clearance. "Yankee White" is a special security investigation considered the nation's most rigorous security background check in which candidates must pass in order to work for the Defense Communications Agency. The criteria include U.S. citizenship, unquestionable loyalty, and an absolute absence of any foreign influence over the individual, his family, or "persons to whom the individual is closely linked."

    • Gibbs: Come on. I saw this in a Harrison Ford movie. Air Force One, from 1997, is a movie about the terrorists hijacking the plane carrying the President of the United States (Ford) and his family. while an ex-soldier works from hiding to defeat them. It is basically the same plot of this episode with the difference that the hero this time is an NCIS Special Agent (also an ex-soldier) and the President is played by a Bush impersonator.
