  • show Description
  • "Make a pilgrimage for the past with me." It is these words, together with a haunting melody from her past, that draw professional assassin Mireille Bouquet into a partnership with Japanese schoolgirl Kirika Yumura, an amnesiac whose instinctive killing skills match Mireille's own abilities. Pursued by relentless and vigilant foes, Kirika and Mireille form a partnership code-named Noir, and begin a quest to discover the truths of their pasts, truths that could lead to their deaths…CharactersMireille Bouquet: a top-class assassin living in Paris, Mireille usually prefers to work alone, but joins up with Kirika to form Noir in the hopes of discovering the truths that she has long wondered about. Always the picture of elegance and grace, Mireille well knows the importance of professional detachment. Despite her attempts to keep a distant and objective view on her work, however, she cannot always hide her deeper emotions.Kirika Yumura: a teenage amnesiac, Kirika's soft words and youthful appearance belie her instinctive and almost brutal killing skills. Able to turn almost anything into a weapon, Kirika's ability easily rivals Mireille's, even if her work is ‘garish' by the other woman's standards. Kirika forms Noir with Mireille in the hopes of unlocking the mysteries of her own past, but rather than seeming fazed by Mireille's pledge to kill her once they discover the truth, she seems to almost welcome the promised release.Chloe: claiming to be the true Noir, Chloe's skill with a knife seems to easily put her in a league of her own. Despite her professional and sometimes cold-blooded killing abilities, Chloe's persona is closer to that of an innocent child taking in the world for the first time. Chloe's motivations and her interest in Mireille and Kirika remain unknown.Altena: Altena may be far from the action, but there seems little doubt that she knows exactly what is going on, and may even be involved behind the scenes somehow. Her aims and goals remain a closely guarded mystery.moreless

    • Mireille: You know what it is that I do for a living. And you know that means I can't let you live. Kirika: Yes. Mireille: All right, I'll team up with you. They're sure to come after us again, and when they do, there's something I want to ask them. Once that's over, I will kill you. Kirika: I'll be waiting for that moment.

    • Mireille: "Even when I was in a crowd, I was always alone" I'm afraid that's not mine. It's Ernest Hemingway, I believe.

    • Mireille: Let's start with the simple fact that I kill people for a living. I'm not here to help you.

    • Kirika: I don't know why I know how to do things like this. How can I know this, how can can I know when I know nothing else?

    • Kirika: It would seem that killing is something that I can do so easily. But why can't I feel sorrow for what I've done?

    • Kirika: Noir, it is the name of an ancient fate. Two maidens who govern death. The peace of the newly born, their black hands protect.

    • Kirika: Daily bread. I make a living killing people...but why doesn't that sadden me? Mireille: If we knew that, I could kill you and be done with it.

    • (After seeing how Kirika had killed off the men.) Mireille: Your work is just so garish.

    Allusions (8)

    • Mireille: "Even when I was in a crowd, I was always alone" I'm afraid that's not mine. It's Ernest Hemingway, I believe.
Ernest Hemingway was an American writer from the early 20th century.

    • Mireille: Prince Myshkin happens to be the protagonist of Dostoevsky's "The Idiot". He's the embodiment of a pure and innocent soul.
Fyodor Dostoevsky was a Russian writer who lived near the end of the 19th century. His works (which include "The Idiot") are famous for their penetrating observations into the human psyche.

    • Mireille: They call themselves the Cosa Nostra
The Cosa Nostra (Our Thing) originated in Sicily- the original intent to protect land soon being superseded by various criminal activities. This mafia organization lived by a strict code of rules called omerta - violation of these rules led to death (in the episode Silvana killed her father for breaking the code of silence). These days the name Cosa Nostra is associated with the Italian-American mafia. The organization is divided into families (such as the Intoccabile's Greone family).

    • (after Silvana kissed Mireille) Mireille: That was the...
Silvana gives Mireille the kiss of death; this is a mafia ritual done to someone to tell them that their assassination has been ordered.

    • Mireille: "He who sees his own reflection dies." It's from a book or something. Poe, I think.
Once again Mireille quotes from a 19th century American author. Edgar Allan Poe was well known for his poetry, horror and detective stories.

    • Mireille: Alice in Wonderland
Another literary reference - Mireille notes that the moonlight tea party with Chloe is almost as bizarre as the Mad Hatter's tea party in Lewis Carroll's popular novel.

    • Mireille: What was it that the Mad Hatter and the March Hare said to Alice - "No room, no room".
Drinking tea in the moonlight, Mireille recalls the events of episode 11, and once again references the mad tea party from Alice in Wonderland.

    • Altena: Born under the mark of Cain.
Altena's preoccupation with sin and religion is evident by her reference to the biblical incident in which Cain murdered his brother Abel. Perhaps she is only remarking on the recurring human capacity for murder, or maybe she also wants to allude to Kirika's murder of Chloe as well.
