  • Episode Description
  • Buster visits Los Angeles where he has his heart set on purchasing a brand-new Schwibbermeier 5000 bike that he's been saving up for. Disappointed that the store is closed when he gets there, he meets up with some kids at a local Boys & Girls Club. They quickly get him interested in their hobby of building and riding low-rider bikes. Before long, he's fantasizing about what it would be like to have his very own low-rider.moreless

    • Muffy: But this is a Schwibbermeier. Binky: That's okay. No one has to know.

    • Buster: Maybe I should rethink my bike. I'll probably be spending more time at the beach than in outer space.

    • Buster: Wow! These cars rock, for real.

    • Brian: They call it a banana seat because it's shaped like a banana.

    • Buster: Does the club have anything a little bigger, something the size of, say, a bike?

    Notes (6)

    • Buster's imaginary custom-made bike features a license plate that reads "The Enterprise." Enterprise was the name of the starship on the original Star Trek as well some more recent spin-offs, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise.

    • Show Promo: Buster talks about the unusual places he's seen in his travels.

    • Wait! I forgot to tell you something I learned in Los Angeles: Kids and adults have been building low-rider bikes for many years. They used to be called "Choppers" because people removed extra parts of the bike to make it go faster.

    • PBS Kids GO! - Dentist's Office - Repeat of a segment first aired in "Among the Hmong"

    • Additionally, the title card at the beginning of the episode reads "The Low Riders."

    Allusions (4)

    • Buster: Did you know there's even low-rider cars? R.J. says we could go see some tomorrow on the way to the picnic.
Driving around in low-riding cars was popularized in part by the song "Low Rider" from the music Group War. Low rider drives a little slower / Low rider is a real goer are just a couple of things the song as to say regarding those who indulge in this hobby.

    • Brian: Diego Rivera.
Buster: Mora told me about him. He was a great mural painter, wasn't he?
Diego Rivera was born on December 8, 1886 and became extremely famous for his murals and other works. Interestingly enough, Diego Rivera was born in Guanajato, Mexico --- the subject of the previous episode of Postcards from Buster.

    • Buster: My friends and I once painted a mural in our school, but I ended up a lot messier than you.
In the Arthur episode April 9th, Buster and his friends painting a mural to express their feelings after there was a fire in their school.

    • Mora: Some people say Los Angeles is the mural capital of the world.
Although some liken it to graffiti, murals have become a highly respected form of art. The complex designs and allowance for much leeway in the style make it a fun form of art.
