  • Stuart Jones (Aidan Gillen) has got it all. He's rich, drop-dead gorgeous and always the centre of attention. He can be forgiven the arrogance because he's pretty close to perfection. His best mate Vince Tyler (Craig Kelly) is funny, adorable and definitely a babe but, unlike his friend, has zero confidence in himself. Since time began, Vince has carried a torch for Stuart but his love remains firmly unrequited. They're both 29, hitting Canal Street every night, stalwarts of the scene but just starting to wonder where else their lives may be going. Then along comes Nathan Maloney (Charlie Hunnam). Young, wild and coming out with a vengeance, he crowbars his way into their world and once he arrives, nothing is ever the same again.moreless

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (31)

    • Vince: He's all muscles. I don't cop off with muscles. I mean what happens. He takes his kit off Marky Mark. I take mine off Norman Wisdom.

    • Stuart: I'm the king of the world! Vince: I'm always Kate Winslet.

    • Vince: Oh my God, oh my God!

    • Stuart: Those pens. I've got to get rid of those pens!

    • Phil: We don't see much of your mother down here, Stu, funny that. How are Mr. and Mrs. Jones still waiting for golden boy to get married?
Nathan: It's like my mother would kill me if she knew I was here. Like we're watching Emmerdale and Zoe Tate was having that lesbian wedding and my mother stood up and turned it off.
Phil: That's not homophobia, that's good taste.

    • Stuart: It's the exact opposite of childbirth. First you have the baby, then you get f**ked.

    • Stuart: Just tell her that you take it up the arse and get out of there!

    • Vince: There are people talking in sentences that have no punchline and they don't even care.

    Notes (3)

    • A still from this episode, featuring Nathan and Stuart in bed, was used by the Manchester-based AIDS charity, "The George House Trust", in a campaign to promote safe sex.

    • When originally broadcast, each of the eight episodes ran 30-odd minutes. When the series was packaged for home video, they combined them to run as four 60-odd minute episodes.

    • While the American version of Queer as Folk closely mirrored this series for the first few episodes, this is where it begins to drastically change. It's revealed at the end of this episode that Phil is dead, though his American counterpart, Ted, wound up in a coma from which he recovered. Beginning with the next episode, the US version veers off in another direction, developing their own storylines (since they had considerably more episodes and time to fill), though they still borrowed heavily from this original series.

    Trivia (1)

    • In the bar, Stuart and Vince are reminiscing about an old photo of motorcyclist Barry Sheene in "red and cream leathers". When Vince is clearing out his old room at his mum's, he comes across the photo, but it's in black and white.

    Allusions (5)

    • Titanic The scene with Stuart and Vince on the hospital's roof is an allusion to the Academy Award winning movie Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Stuart yells "I'm the king of the world!" with Vince infront of him, his arms stretched out. To which Vince replies "Why am I always Kate Winslet?" This is actually a mix up of two scenes from the movie. "I'm the king of the world!" is exclaimed by DiCaprio's character as he stands at the bow of the ship together with his best friend (played by Danny Nucci). It's not until later that meets Winslet's character and eventually ends up at the bow again, this time holding her as Stuart does with Vince.

    • Doctor Who Vince is a big fan of British cult tv series Doctor Who. He has a Dalek in his fishtank and watches the Doctor Who adventure The Pyramids of Mars on tv. Russell T. Davies who wrote Queer as Folk would later renew Doctor Who, which became a success and as of 2008 has just finished its fourth season.

    • Doctor Who Stuart's gift to Vince is the robot dog K-9 from cult classic Doctor Who (Vince's biggest interest). According to Russell T. Davies they actually used the real K-9 prop and it was operated by Mat Irvine, who built the original K-9 and occasionally operated him for Doctor Who.

    • Doctor Who Vince's ultimate test in this episode is the ability to chronologically list all the actor playing the Doctor in cult series Doctor Who. Stuart of course suceeds (listing the first seven Doctors: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy) and also says that Paul McGann (8th Doctor) doesn't count. Some fans doesn't want to count McGann's Doctor since he only starred in the movie (which had several inconsistencies compared to the tv series). Queer as Folk was made before creator Russel T Davies moved on to renewing Doctor Who, and the list therefore does not include the last two Doctors (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant). However, both Stuart and Vince refer to the character as "Doctor Who", which is a common mistake. Doctor Who is just the name of the show, the main character himself is always referred to as The Doctor.

    • Star Wars When Nathan returns, Alexander greets him with "Oh piss off Anakin Skywalker, we're busy". He is of course referring to the Star Wars charater who later became Darth Vader. Charlie Hunnam (Nathan) actually auditioned for the role of Anakin for Star Wars episode II, but the role went to Hayden Christensen.

  • Stuart Allen Jones is handsome, streetwise, and oozing with sex appeal, and one of the key players on Canal Road. Vince is his best friend, down to earth yet in search of an unrequited love. Enter Nathan, confused teen, who turns their life upside down.
