  • show Description
  • In the year 400 A.D., a young Irish man, Conor, sets out to rid his land of the invading Romans, but in order to accomplish it, he must unite the Celtic clans. Roar chronicles the extraordinary life of a reluctant 20-year-old orphaned Prince who is forced to rise above tragedy to lead his people to freedom. Conor's allies include his trusted advisor, Galen (a wise man who possesses the secrets of magic and power), Tully (a cocky teenage troublemaker), Catlin (a beautiful former slavegirl but now a fearful fighter) and Fergus (Conor's devoted protector). Their enemy is Longinus, appearingly a normal 30-year-old man but who is actually the 400-year-old Roman Centurion sorceror of the evil Queen Diana. In this fight for freedom, what's most important for Conor and his people is the Roar - the roar of the land, the roar of the people - a voice that echoes through every living creature and is the power of life. OPENING CREDITS: The opening credits had the following voiceovers: Long ago, at the edge of the known world the last Celtic tribes were fighting for survival. Europe had fallen to the Romans and this remote and untamed island was the final stronghold of the Ancient ways. and 400 AD, in a land of a hundred warring tribes, a young prince comes of age. Having lost his family and the woman he cherished, he has sworn to unite his people and defend his home. Bent on destroying him is a Roman Queen, Diana and her eternal love, Longinus, a 400 year old man who cannot die. Between history and myth a great battle will be waged, in the name of a timeless power called ... THE ROAR! FILMING LOCATION: The series was filmed entirely on location in Queensland, Australia. BROADCASTING: 13 episodes were produced and filmed, but only 8 were originially aired in the United States on Fox. • Conor: This is the first step toward uniting our land. Now when we fight, we fight for each other, for our freedom, our future and for those that have come before us. This is our home! And we are people that will not be put down, will not be broken and will never be silenced!

    • Claire (to Gar): What have you done? Was it their land, their gold? Your people are out there celebrating. Diana: They're happy. They feel secure here. Claire: You made them do this, didn't you? You and that Roman freak. Gar: Derek was an obstacle to our future... your future. Claire: How many others are dead? Tell me! Longinus: All of them, said the freak.

    • Fergus: Those were Gar's men. You shouldn't be messing with them. Conor: They were beating on a girl. Fergus: Looked to me like they were beating on you.

    • Fergus (to Conor): You're late for your brother's wedding. (to the slavemaster) And you're not invited...

    • Narrator: Long ago, at the edge of the known world, the last Celtic tribes were fighting for survival. The great continent had fallen to the Romans, and this remote and untamed island was the final stronghold of the ancient ways. If the people in the land were to endure, they would have to rise up as one against the invaders. And this they did, with a fury.

    • Conor: How come you never married? Fergus: I was stuck with you.

    • Conor: Do you always have to follow me everywhere? Fergus: Your father said it was you or the sheep. The sheep were already taken...

    • Conor: This is my fight! Fergus (about the slave driver): And he's clearly at your mercy...

    Allusions (1)

    • Title: The Spear of Destiny
The Spear of Destiny was said to have been used by Loginus to stab Christ in the side. It has been said that possession of the spear would give one the power to conquer the world. The fact that at the end of the episode Loginus decides to no longer try to remake the world in his image while in possession of the spear is almost contradictory.
