One of the episodes of this show all TV buffs must see.
Retro has been re-running the first season of this legendary show. Some of the episodes I have seen have been second or third rate; at least one has ( A Fury Slinging Flame ) has been so bizarre that it teeters on the edge of camp. However, there have been some out and out gems: "Sheba", "Strengthening Angels", " Ten Drops Of Water", and this, "Fly Away Home." For some reason, it is not rated above 7.4 on this siute; however, it deserves at least a nine. It is a two- parter (one of the two in show history.)that almost approaches cinematic quality.
There are no fist fights, and Todd and Buzz are more of a chorus to the tragedy than central players. Having said that, this is a superb, deeply moving, tale. Michael Rennie is terrific as a doomed crop-dusting pilot, and Osacr winner Dorothy ( Written on the Wind ) Malone , is poignant as his estranged wife. At its best, Route 66 was one of the best things ever put on television; fiully worthy of being ranked with the fifty best dramatic series of all time, and perhaps even worthy of being in the top twenty. Rero deserves plaudits; perhaos they will eventually get around to rerunning certain dramatic series about an abrasive, dedicated brain surgeon and a certain crusading, idealistic state legislator.moreless
