  • Samantha "Sam" Newly is a corporate executive and hit-and-run victim who awakens after being in a coma for eight days, only to find she has amnesia. With no memories of the past, she must rediscover everything about her life and herself by looking for clues from her past. Sam discovers that she wasn't a very nice person to most people and she is determined to change that. She also discovers that she cheated on her boyfriend Todd (played by Barry Watson) with a married man. Sam even learns that her "accident" was no accident at all, but a failed attempt at someone trying to kill her, but who? Slowly but surely little parts of her start to emerge to the delight of some and to the shock of others. Will she change or will she act like she did before her amnesia? The people that Sam has to rely on aren't all what they appear to be. Sam leans on her parents after she awakens, but has no idea that she hasn't spoken to them in over two years. Sam thinks that Dena is her best friend, but Andrea, her real best friend, lets in be known that Sam and Dena haven't even spoken to each other since the seventh grade. Andrea on the other hand is hiding a lot of Sam's wild past from her, which could be disastrous. And then there is Frank, the door man at Todd's apartment. Up until the accident, Sam had never spoken a word to him, but one days ends up saying hi to him and is shocked to learn how observant he is. Production companies are ABC Studios & Brillstein-Grey Television. The show was originally called Sam I Am, but changed to Samantha Be Good because of copyrights issues with Dr. Seuss's estate and his legendary children's book Green Eggs and Ham. It was later changed to Samantha Who?moreless

  • Quotes (380)

    • Todd: Hey, can I take your picture? Samantha: Really mister? Are you one of them photographers who's looking for models? Todd: No, I just want to show the cops a picture of the girl who stole my latte.

    • Todd: Sorry I was outside. (He looks at the latte in Sam's hand.) Whoa is that mine? Samantha: No it's mine. Todd: You're name is Todd? Samantha: Uh huh. Todd: Me too. Samantha: Oh good. Then I'll see you at the Todd Club.

    • Sam: (at the AA meeting) I can go and have a bite of the lemon square, umm ummm, chew, chew. It's really good. But, does that desire alone make me a lemon square person? Or, am I just really a blueberry tart person? Who really wants to be a sweet lovely little lemon square person but is destined to wake up day after day, a freaking blueberry tart.

    • Sam: Good things about amnesia: all new clothes, no re-runs. Bad: every minute is like that dream where you haven't been to class all year, and the test is now.

    • Sam: Couple of good things about being in a coma: no fattening food, lots of rest, they sponge you down every day. It's like a spa. Bad things: my nose itches, I have something called the "Pina Colada Song" stuck in my head, and, oh yeah, sometimes I can hear what people in my room are saying.

    • Sam: Okay, I am going to live with you, but in a separate room, or on the couch, and I am not going to have sex with you. So you can just get that out of your mind, mister. Girl(from other room): Dave, who is that woman? Dave: No idea. Todd: Hey, Sam, it's this way.

    • Samantha: No. No, come on, you have to go. It's a birthday party. It'll be, you know, fun. Todd: Even though you regard birthdays as childish ploys for harvesting attention and gifts? Samantha: Oh, when did I say that?! Todd: When you forgot mine.

    • Samantha: Essay Question: Answer in complete sentences. If you could start over, rewind your life, do it all differently, what would you change, even if that change was hard and scary and might leave you more alone?

    Allusions (34)

    • Samantha: I played the role of "Annie". This is an allusion to the musical Annie, based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip "Little Orphan Annie", in which a 11-year-old orphan girl lives in Depression era in New York City.

    • Regina, Sam's mom, was pretending to go in the theater to watch Mamma Mia! That's a musical based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA.

    • This episode title is based off the 2006 movie The Break-Up, starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn.

    • Towards the end of the episode, when Samantha was getting off the elevator, she describes love as really being a battlefield. "Love is a Battlefield" is a song popularized by Pat Benatar during the 80's.

    • Samantha: ...The meaning can be interpreted in countless ways, like that statue of a giant clothespin. Samantha was referring to Claes Oldenburg's 45-foot-high, 10-ton steel sculpture of a clothespin located at Centre Square Plaza, Fifteenth and Market streets in Philadelphia near the City Hall.

    • Regina: Well, that's what those artists do. They get these models drunk. They loosen their inhibitions and they sleep with them. You saw Titanic. Titanic is the 1997 movie which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater. In the movie, Rose asked Jack to sketch her in the nude. Not long after, they made love inside a Renault traveling car in the cargo hold area.

    • Samantha: (making a hand gesture to the guys in the science fiction aisle) Carry on. The hand gesture made by Samantha is the Vulcan salute popularized on the original Star Trek series. It consists of raising one's hand with palms out and the middle and ring fingers parted. The usual accompanying greeting with the gesture is "Live long and prosper."

    • Andrea: Well, you know what they say about the forbidden fruit. The "forbidden fruit" is a Biblical reference to the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which Adam and Eve took a bite out of (Book of Genesis). Eating of the fruit led to the loss of their innocence and their banishment from the Garden of Eden. It is a metaphor of anything which one desires but cannot have.
