    • Norm: When the people here asked me to do the show, I've got to say, I felt kind of weird. I don't know if you remember this, but I used to actually be on this show. I used to do the "Weekend Update" news routine, you remember that? That's where I did the make-believe news jokes. That was me, you know? So then, a year and a half ago, I had sort of a disagreement with the management at NBC. I wanted to keep my job. Right? And they felt the exact opposite. They fired me because they said that I wasn't funny. Now, with most jobs, I could have had a hell of a lawsuit on my hands for that, but see, this is a comedy show. So, they got me. But, now, this is the weird part, it's only a year and a half later, and now, they ask me to host the show. So I wondered, how did I go from being not funny enough to be even allowed in the building, to being so funny that I'm now hosting the show? How did I suddenly get so goddamn funny?! It was inexplicable to me, because, let's face it, a year and a half is not enough time for a dude to learn how to be funny! Then it occurred to me, I haven't gotten funnier, the show has gotten really bad! So, yeah, I'm funny compared to, you know, what you'll see later. Okay, so let's recap: the bad news is, I'm still not funny. The good news is, the show blows!

    • Alex Trebek: We either would have accepted "bow wow" or "ruff." Sean Connery: Oh, rough, just the way your mother likes it, Trebek.

    • Burt Reynolds: I'll take that condom thing for eight thousand. Alex Trebek: That's condiments for 400.

    • Alex Trebek: Mr. Reynolds has apparently changed his name to Turd Ferguson.

    • Burt Reynolds: Why don't ya gimmie... "Ape tit" for 200. Alex Trebek: It's not "ape tit." It's "a petit..." nevermind. Just do "Animal Sounds" for 200. This is the sound a doggy makes. (Sean Connery buzzes) Sean Connery: Moo... Alex Trebek: No. Sean Connery: Well, that's the sound your mother made last night.

    Notes (8)

    • Sketches not shown in the 60 minute version: Dr Dre and Eminem's performance of "Forget About Dre," all three "Larry King News & Views" segments, "TV Funhouse: Charlton Heston and the NRA" (cartoon), "Michael Jackson," "Inside the Actor's Studio," "Dentist Couple," and "Chess for Girls" (rerun 12/6/97).

    • During the "Dr. McMullin and Wife" sketch, Cheri Oteri refers to one of the trick-or-treaters as "Lori Nasso", which is actually the name of one of the co-writers of this sketch.

    • In the original version on NBC, Norm says the word "Goddamn" (or a variation of the word) three times: once in the monologue and twice in the "Inside the Actor's Studio" sketch. In the 60-minute edit, the "God" part of "Goddamn" (and its variations) was muted out.

    • The start of this broadcast was delayed 14 minutes due to NBC's coverage of the 1999 World Series.

    • There were mixed feelings when Norm returned to host. He was still a bit peeved by losing the "Weekend Update" segment to Colin Quinn, and he mentions his anger in the monologue. On the plus side, he had a hit sitcom on ABC.

    Trivia (2)

    • During WU, Colin Quinn interrupts a joke to ad-lib "God bless you" after a sneeze is heard in the audience. When he finishes the joke, he makes a tissue gesture at the audience member.

    • On "Weekend Update", as the punchline to a joke pertaining to TV Guide's decision to not list reruns, Colin Quinn suggests watching next week's show, which will be hosted by Fran Tarkenton with musical guest Leon Redbone. In his one appearance on SNL, Tarkenton hosted with Leo Sayer as the musical guest, and Redbone was musical guest in episodes hosted by Elliott Gould, Buck Henry, and Bruce Dern. Tarkenton and Redbone never appeared together on SNL.

    Allusions (1)

    • When Norm MacDonald walks onstage to begin his monologue, the audience shouts, "NORM!" just like when Norm Peterson entered the bar on Cheers.
