  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (2)

    • Parrot: Stick 'em up! What's the password? Shaggy: "The great ape is first-rate."

    • Shaggy: (wearing a 1700s style wig) Give me liberty, or give me pizza pie!

    Notes (4)

    • Villian: Carl the Stuntman Reason: He decided to ruin picture because he didn't get the lead part.

    • Adapted into the comic book story of the same name (Gold Key issue #1, March 1970).

    • First time a "Shaggy Snack" is made. In A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, though, they are more common and look just like Scooby Snacks.

    • Shaggy rhetorically asks, "Who's afraid of a big, bad ape?" which sounds out of character for him.

    Trivia (5)

    • This is the only episode where the bad guy out of the mask is revealed before the "final unmasking". In the episode, Shaggy and Scooby encounter the ape man without the mask and Shaggy photographs him. In the final unmasking, the villain is revealed in the photograph and he isn't unmasked by the gang.

    • When Freddy falls through the trap, the script is on the table. But when the scene flashes back to where Freddy disappeared, the script is gone.

    • In this episode, a latex Scooby-Doo mask is featured. The Ape Man puts it on to play the old mirror gag with Scooby. You'll notice that the neck on the mask covers down to the shoulders. However in the final scene with Shaggy wearing the mask, the neck is much shorter. Not only that, but after Shaggy peels off the Scooby mask, the collar VANISHES BEFORE YOUR EYES!

    • A wig disappears from a wig stand.

    • At one point, Shaggy says "Zooks!" instead of his trademark "Zoinks!"

    Allusions (2)

    • Shaggy: Yeah, you got him. King Kong in the flesh! When Shaggy gets stuck in the trap and the gang think they got The Ape Man, he references King Kong.

    • None: Ape Man wearing a Scooby-Doo mask
The concept of a villain impersonating a good guy by wearing a realistic costume or mask of him/her (typically to give the hero a bad image or confuse him) is a classic Hanna-Barbera gag, which was also used with Ricochet Rabbit, Hong Kong Phooey, Grape Ape's pal Beegle Beagle, Squiddly Diddly, Fred Flintstone, Richie Rich, Snagglepuss and even Scooby-Dee. This would also occur on three later episodes, Scooby's Gold Medal Gambit, Homeward Hound and A Scooby-Doo Valentine, as well as on a later ad in the UK with David Beckham wearing a Scooby suit.
