Scooby's All Star Laff-A-Lympics

Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions

Quotes (5)

  • (During the Climbing Big Ben event) Snagglepuss: Shaggy, could you tell us the secret of your quick ascent? Shaggy: Like, would you like to know the secret of my quick descent? Snagglepuss: Indeed I would. I would indeed. Shaggy: Your helicopter blade is cutting my rope!

  • Snagglepuss: Jet Buggy?! How Really Rotten!

  • (During the Fill Up the Oasis Contest) Dee Dee: What'll we do, Babu? Our fair play is no match for the Rottens' rotten play. Babu: No problem, Dee Dee. It's as simple as Yapple Dapple! (uses magic to create a rain cloud) Dread Baron: Egads! It can't be!? Not a rainstorm in the Sahara!? Especially not with 100-gallon raindrops!?(gets washed out of the scene) Drat! A perfectly Rotten scheme washed up! DRAAAAAAT!!! Announcer: It's absolutely incredible, folks! But the rainstorm is coming down by the bucketful and into the oasis well! In fact, it's almost filled! Dee Dee: Babu, you did it again! Babu: (blushing and chuckling) Oh gee! Come on girls!

  • (In addition to the Rottens' point deductions from their cheating in the previous events) Announcer: Plus a well-deserved bonus penalty of 30 points. For an all-time cheating record, leaves them with (laughing) zilcho.

  • (During Babu's run in the Hang Gliding contest) Announcer: This is amazing! Babu, gliding for the Scoobys, has a spectacular flight of over 1200 feet, undoubtedly a new world's record. Without a hang glider though, this eliminates his flying performance. Sorry about that, Babu. No points.

Notes (46)

  • Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics first aired in 1977 as a two-hour block as the umbrella title for episodes of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! replays, The Scooby-Doo/ Dynomutt Hour, and the introduction of Laff-a-Lympics and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. The block aired on ABC from 9 AM Eastern Time to 11 AM. It was renamed Scooby's All-Stars in season two and reduced to 90 minutes. The opening used in this episode is how the 2-hour series opened each week.

  • First victory for the Scooby Doobies.

  • Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone appear in this episode as the latter demonstrates (very badly) the objective of the lacrosse event.

  • Prior to the final event, Yogi Bear is profiled as he's seen in Jellystone Park. Ranger Smith makes a cameo appearance.

  • This is the pilot episode of Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics, although it airs as the sixteenth in the series (as indicated by the original airdate). Notice the different opening theme which introduces Scooby-Doo and the gang (with a clip featuring Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma even though the latter 3 never actually appeared in the series), Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. This was mainly because their shows, like Laff-a-Lympics all aired on ABC's Saturday morning lineup at the time, as part of the 90-minute block titled Scooby's All-Stars. This original theme can be seen when the play arrow is clicked on the video monitor at this link:

  • The Baseball Batting Contest is the only individual event Hong Kong Phooey competed this season.

  • Though this episode was the first to air, the actual pilot was the Quebec and Baghdad Laff-A-Lympics, which had the different opening theme. Also notice that the outlines of the team captains on the scoreboard aren't as fine as they were for the majority of the remaining episodes. Their images on the scoreboard are slightly smaller and very nearly transparent compared to the later episodes.

  • Mumbly bears a strong resemblence to his mother, Mrs. Mumbly, who appears a couple of times in the first half of this episode (interviewed by Mildew) cheering her son. She has dark gray hair (If not a wig), wears a pink dress, and certainly has the same snicker Mumbly does.

Trivia (56)

  • Goof: In the original opening theme for this episode, notice that when the Rottens team rises from the pool of mud in the tug-of-war between the other teams, Daisy Mayhem's hair changes from dark to blonde.

  • Goof: Prior to the lacrosse event, Shaggy was introduced as the Scoobys' team competitor, but he ended up in the role of coaching the actual participant of the event, Scooby-Doo himself.

  • Goofs: During the Tree Cutting Contest, when Taffy cheers on Captain Caveman, she says "Go Cavey. Go!" But the voice heard is Brenda's. Also after the same event, the top portion of Mumbly's trenchcoat is green like his Rottens' team jersey.

  • Goof: The Yogi team contestants initially seen for the toboggan event were Grape Ape, Quick Draw McGraw, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy. Somehow, after the team begins its run, Augie is inexplicably replaced by Wally Gator, who finishes the event with the other three.

  • Goof: The contestants for the motorboat race aren't announced, which seems to indicate there was some kind of audio problem prior to the start of the event.

  • Goofs: The scoreboard seen prior to the Fox Hunt has Scooby-Doo pictured as gray-colored instead of brown. After this same event, the announcer said each team would be awared 15 points, but the score never actually changed.

  • Goof: When Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels skate by Snagglepuss prior to the polo event, Dee Dee is as light-skinned as Brenda and Taffy.

  • Goof: Though the Yogis and Rottens finished tied for second, the latter team is awarded third place and Mumbly the bronze medal.
